Surgery done and dusted

2 minute read time.

I’m writing this from my hospital bed and I’m pleased to say that my surgery yesterday all went to plan. They removed my right nipple and the cancer lump attached to it as well as half the lymph nodes on my right side (which was the plan as I only had two which originally showed signs of cancer and following the MRI after chemo no cancer was detected on that, however, if the biopsy from these removed ones shows any cancer I may need to have further surgery to remove the rest).

I briefly spoke to my surgeon when I came round whilst I was in recovery but as I was still fairly high on drugs at the time he just told me it went to plan and that he would see me later today to go over it properly, which was probably wise! When I got back to my room I was given a cup of tea and some biscuits, which reminded me of the tea you get after given birth, except this time instead of holding my new baby I had some boob bandages and a lovely drain coming out of my armpit!

I feel surprisingly good today, I’m not in any pain and am able to move and walk around. I may even be able to be discharged later today once my surgeon has seen me, which is a day earlier than planned so that’s good.  I suspect that the pain will come in the next few days once the drugs wear off! I still have questions, I won’t know how truly successful this has all been until after I’ve spoken to the surgeon later and after the biopsy results. I’m also not sure how long the dressing stays on or when I’ll be able to have a shower etc, but for now I’m feeling good. It went well, my boob still looks the same size it always did and I’m not in the pain I thought I would be so let’s take all that as a win for now!

I will write again with more details once I’ve spoken to the surgeon and some more questions are answered, but hopefully this gives a bit of a positive note to anyone who may be nervous and awaiting their own procedures.  Obviously everyone is different, but I have faith in our wonderful medical professionals who take great care of us all and makes what may seem very scary surgeries for us calm and easier.

Finally to hopefully elicit a few smiles, after I had a video call with my boys this morning my eldest drew the attached picture of me. Note the details of the arrow on my hand (where the surgeon had marked which side to operate, I didn’t have the heart to let my son know he’d drawn it on the wrong side), the lovely orange DVT prevention compression things on one of my legs (the other was under my cover when I showed them, hence why it is white) and finally the attention to detail by drawing my chemo rash! Thanks darling Smile

As ever take care everyone xxx
