Such a long wait for surgery

1 minute read time.

On Monday I found out that my surgery will not go ahead until 3rd Nov!! Such a long wait I feel considering I was diagnosed on 15th Sept with grade 2 breast cancer and my tumour is 11cm so I’m told. Has anyone else experienced such a waiting time? Is this normal procedure?

I`m so worried about it spreading further through my body (If it hasn't already) but they said a few weeks is neither here nor there... who are they kidding eh...  maybe not for them but wow it seems like a lifetime now to me.

I am still yet to tell my 8 year old, just as well as I do not want to get her worried to soon before surgery. Had some fantastic advise from this site regarding speaking to your children,  I`d like to thank those who replied again, your suggestions changed how I looked at the whole picture of things and have cleared my mind of some doubts.

Do we have a choice as to whether we have a single or double mastectomy? I already have 2 calcium deposits in my other breast and have been told that this will be cut out during the surgery for a left mastectomy... can I choose 2 be done with it and have both removed now rather than the constant worry of it re-occurring in the future and ending up with more surgery in the future? Just all seems a bit bizarre right now. Can anyone shed any light on this as my appt with breast care nurse is not until next week? Thanks again to all X

Hello, I just wanted to say that I am not an expert, but I'm sure if you wanted to go ahead with a double mastectomy, there shouldn't be a problem. After all it is your body and I think the option should have been given, so, if that is what you want, I think you should have a frank discussion with your doctors.

Wishing you all the very best.  Christine xx

Hi Motherofone. I have just had surgery. I was diagnosed back in April 2010, had to go through FEC Chemo to shrink the 9 x 7.5 inches not cms to ensure some clearance for a successful operation.  Yes you can have a single or double mastectomy at the same time, but if you are considering having reconstruction done, then either get double mastectomy with a future reconstruction later or get one done at a time with reconstruction each time. My operation took 14 hours for one mastectomy and reconstruction from the buttock area; reason length of time is that the plastic needs to attach blood vessels from the area of body that will be best suited for reconstruction.

You may wish to choose not to have reconstruction or another type of reconstruction. It will also depend whether you will need to have any radiotherapy as this can affect a silicon reconstruction. Hope this all helps and I am sure your breast care team will help talk things over with you, it is your choice.

I know how overwhelming this can all be, but please do not be frightened to make a list  of questions or uncertainties you may have to take with you to your next meeting.

All the best and I hope you have the information you need to enable you to make the right decision for you. Take Care and all the best.

dear motherofone.  this is appalling.  you should have had your surgery by now.  What is the NHS thinking about.  It is YOUR life, YOUR body and if you want to have a double mastectomy then do it.  Do not, in any way, be pushed around by the doctors.  Take charge!  I did.  I was diagnosed in 2007 with cancer in both breasts. I immediatley asked for both of them to be taken off,  A decision I have never regretted.  Good luck.  When u see your Breast Cancer Nurse....be strong, push for an earlier op date and YOU make your decision re the mastectomy.

Hi, i had single masectomy in feb with chest expander put in ready for permanant implant. I had MRI scan on other breast but it showed nothing but with hindsight i now wish that my mind was clearer at the time and pushed for double recontruction as it will always worry me. Everyone is different but if you do decide you want double you have to push for it.

    Good luck Love Kaz x
