It's the waiting game......again

1 minute read time.
So due to have my last chemo session this Thursday (15th). Went to see oncologist on Friday, saw his registrar. The usual questions how are you? Blah blah I explain about the pain in my leg ( which I have had all along and was told it was due to the DVT) the pain goes through phases of being really bad to nothing. I also mentioned how my back is getting worse - I'm walking with a stick! I'm like an old woman. Now I've mentioned my bad back before because I do suffer with back problems and I see a chiropractor. Now I put my bad back down to being led in bed for a month due to chemo side effects. The chiropractor said I am making progress even tho slow. But the registrar says that my symptoms have worsened and cancelled my last chemo session because " I don't want to pump you full of toxins if it's not working" I said I still wanted to go ahead with the session. But today I rang the chemo unit to rearrange my bloods appointment because it clashed with my ct scan I was told that I wasn't having it!!!!! Rang the oncologist secretary who told me it had been cancelled because my symptoms had worsened! Now I am scared and upset to say the least. Surely the cancer doesn't spread while your undergoing chemo!!! So there you have it ! Have I a bad back or has the cancer spread into my bones, in which case isn't good!! Suppose I'll just have to wait for the 23rd

  • Hi,

I think it would be acceptable for you to have a direct conversations with your oncologist to fully understand their reason. Your already have an underlying back condition that may just be amplified with chemo. My mum was asymptomatic when diagnosed but she had some scary symptoms on chemo that resolved when she came off.

If your cancer type has a tumour marker they can tell you how it has been over the chemo period .

They may not be too concerned as it is your last treatment and feel that the balance has been struck. This happens a lot in bowel cancer where they feel ok about reducing the dose or stopping near the end  if it is becoming unmanageable due to the side effects not necessarily disease progression.

You could also have a chat with your GP.

    Take care
