Radiotherapy

1 minute read time.

Went for MRI Monday morning. Was struggling to get there as shoulder and neck were killing me and even the oramorph wasn’t helping. Anyway got a pretty thorough scan of my spine.

Went to Clinic yesterday (Wed) and was struggling again and had to ask for somewhere to lie down as that is the only way to get rid of the pain.

Saw my oncologist who said that there are 2 trapped nerves (between vertebrae) at the top of my spine and that they were planning radiotherapy and also thinking about it for my head. But since I was getting worse and unable to control it she went off to speak to radiotherapy people and they came straight to see me.

They also offerd me a bed so that they could concentrate on controlling the pain but I declined. If I can't control it myself they said to ring and they will admit me.

The result is I started radiotherapy yesterday and will get five sessions on my head and neck. (T,F,M,T,W). They also gave me some high dose steroids for my neck/shoulder pain and they have already made a big difference. See oncologist again next Wednesday and we’ll discuss more chemo then.

Can’t complain about the speed they work at or the attention they’re giving me. (Freeman Hospital)

Mo - I was gouing to ask about WBR but they beat me to it :)

PS will definitely lose hair now.

    Hi Steve

I am so glad to hear that they are addressing the brain mets and also pain relief for you.

My husband had chemo on Monday and is feeling very tired right now, he also always gets thrush in his mouth and throat just after chemo, he now has the medication on hand to deal with it and it doesn't become too much of an issue.

    Keep fighting

    Best Wishes

    Mo

i steve - i too am suffering from pain in my soulder - arm and neck - my doctor is referring me to the pain clinic - when i saw your poating i was very keen to read it and see what they were offering you - are there any side affects to having the steriods? i am taking a cocktail of medication to try and help control the pain but even with all of tablets along with orimorph i still dont allways get much relief - i have nbeen told that it is probably due to scaring from the radiotheraphy - but i did have this pain before the rt which was when my cancer returned so not too sure what is causing it and to be honest it doesn't really matter what is causing it i just want something to stop it - it is really unbearable at times - please keep posting your progress as i will be interested in how you are getting on - take care - karen xoxo

Sorry Lawrie I missed this post. Steroids (dexamethasone) just made me hungry all of the time and they've been slowly reduced to 2 a day now (but still hungry!!)  Oramorph didn't seem to help much with me either at first but it does now so the RT must has had some effect. The pain would go from an ordinary severe pain to a really bad burning type pain. Funnily enough Ibuprofen seemed to help the most presumably because it reduces inflamation. Mine is almost certainly down to the secondary in my spine. (Found on bone scan)
