Help! prolonged Docetaxel side effects!

1 minute read time.

I had my last docetaxel dose 3 weeks ago and I'm still suffering with side effects.   I get very breathless and still suffering with really bad fatigue. It wouldn't be so bad but I can't even sleep. I got to bed and lie there listening to my lovely hubby snoring away. Eventually I get fed up just lying there and slink of to the spare room where I can listen to the radio or have a read. If I'm lucky I manage to drop off to sleep around 4 or 5am. I set my alarm for 9 every morning as if I don't I'd sleep til lunch time! I'm trying to regain control of my sleep pattern and even went to the doctors for some sleeping tablets, something I never imagined I'd need! But the pills have no effect on me whatsoever My brain seems to go into hyper drive once my head hits the pillow!

As for the breathlessness, when it started my oncologist gave me every test under the sun! MRI's X-rays, blood tests, ecg's ekg's, you name it, I had it. As you might have guessed, everything came back normal, which is comforting in one way, but bloody annoying in another as I seem to be stuck with it!   It's so frustrating, I can't even walk up the stairs with out puffing life a 50 a day smoker!

Just to add a bit of excitment to everything else I have also developed peripheral neuropathy in my toes, lovely!

And I thought once the chemo was over life was going to be a piece of cake!

Anyone got any ideas please?

Thanks  D xxx

Hello Donna, congrats of finishing your docetaxel but 3 weeks post is hardly grounds for 'bouncing back' to health!  You really have been through the mill so treat yourself well, don't expect too much, visit a spa, lots of massages, nice little walks, good nutrition.  Your body has to recover from being poisoned and hopefully, given time, you will feel better.  You must listen to your body though and not be too hard on yourself.  You will not be like you were before cancer, you are how you are now, so be kind to yourself.  Ann x

Thanks Ann  Phoned my bcn today re the breathing and she had a word with my oncologist and I'm going to see him on thursday. I also saw my gp who has given me some Lorazepam which she thinks will sort out the sleeping problem, so feel a bit better today. I guess you're right, typical me trying to run before I can walk!
