As if the banks didn't have the lowest reputation possible already...... having moved house relatively recently, I took out a new mortgage (no problem with that), and went to the same bank, with whom I've had mortgages for the past 15 years or so, to arrange life assurance to cover the mortgage term.
Being truthful , I was completely straight about my condition, and, being the generous understanding souls that they were, they thid not "refuse" me cover, but sggested they were "unable to at this time", and would be happy to hear from me in a year's time....
If anything highlights the the flaws in the capitalist system, red in tooth and claw, then this was it.....
I think I'm actually shocked more by this, than the actual cancer diagnosis. The cancer diagnosis was people telling me about a natural state, however undesirable - the refusal of life insurance was people saying, "we've been more than happy to take money of you when, you're well, in case you got ill, but now you are actually ill, we're avoiding you like the plague because we can't make a sure buck out of you...." - nice !
Throws all these nice TV ads, showing how caring these banks all are, into somewhat sharp relief......should say " We love you - when you're profitable...."
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
