Low Platelets

1 minute read time.

Only just scraped in to start third cycle of chemo as platelets dropped to 98 The Dr said Peter could carry on as he is otherwise coping ok. but really 100 is the cut off point.

He has been very red faced again that seems to be settling ,and he is bruising very easily.and cuts bleed longer.

We are fingers crossed that his platelets will rise before next appointment

.The Plan is 6 cycles of chemo then CT scan and decide next step.

The stent which is laying in Peters stomach will be left there unless anything happens, meaning they have to go down or in, when it may be removed at the same time.

This is the safest option as there is still only a very small gap to get through and his risk of bleeding is very high.

I have been looking for any way of boosting his platelets, and so far have stopped all carbonated drinks and increased green leafy veg. but I have a feeling cycle 4 may be delayed or the dose reduced. obviously given that Peter is inoperable this could be a real setback.

I must stop running to meet trouble it is quite capable of making it all the way here on its own..

Try not to worry too much about delays in treatment if counts are low, etc. (easier said than done, I know!!). My husband has had a couple of delays as his white cell count dropped too low. It usually creeps back up during the delay of a week. It's very common and in the greater schemes of things doesn't make a big difference.  Take care xx

    Hi TinaM

Thank you for your comment and reassurance, I will try not to worry.

We have booked a 60s weekend break just before next chemo appointment so hopefully it will take our minds off what may or may not happen. Best Wishes Mushty

Cycles are sometimes delayed - happened to me multiple times (sometimes due to low platelets).  Doesn't seem to have done any harm - the main downside was that it took annoyingly long to get through some phases of treatment!
