Our happy respite was indeed all to brief
Sunday
We got the sad news that one of Peters longest and dear friends had died, it was such a shock the two of them met up every January for a weekend but this year Peter didn't go as he was unwell and in hospital having just been diagnosed. At the time we said never mind go when your are feeling better but of course with treatment etc it didn't happen.
His sons had been trying to contact us but we have moved a few times, and changed phone numbers, any way they finally located us via our youngest daughter on Sunday but their Dad had died late on Friday
Monday
We got a telephone call as my mother had collapsed, it takes me about 2 hours to drive to her depending on the time of day and traffic. .Fortunately my eldest brother was on hand until I arrived, The GP wanted to admit her to hospital but there was no bed available & as she couldn't be left alone I stayed over caring for her waiting for a bed. but by Wednesday still nothing so I organised a 24 hour rota of family and carers to care for her at home with G.P visiting.
Wednesday
I had to leave Mum at lunchtime, drive home, collect Peter and go to The Royal Marsden arrived at 10pm to spend the night prior to his stent shuffle surgery tomorrow. The family rooms are great, takes all the hassle out of early appointments
Thursday
8.00 Chelsea & Westminster Hospital Peters surgery went well, he had the two previous stents removed, both had slipped into his stomach, then a permanent stent was placed across the oesophageal junction an awkward procedure, which is why he had to go to a specialist center. they also carried out the first visual inspection of his stomach and duodenum both were clear. brilliant news..
We returned to The Marsden where poor Peter slept all afternoon and night only stirring for drinks
Friday
Peter woke slowly, sore but glad its over, he managed yogurt and a complan smoothie for breakfast, and swallowed his chemo tablets without dissolving them. When he felt ready we came home but the 3 hour journey has wiped him out
He has been so brave and doesn't moan, but he is weak and tired now so a few days R&R are needed to perk him up
