help:information please: womb cancer

Less than one minute read time.

hi, dont know if anyone can help please.  My mum went for a routine check up at the doctors and while she was there was told she needed to have a smear, (she didnt think she needed one as she was 69) anyway she had one and the results was told by a nurse that she has womb cancer, go away and wait for a hospital apointment.  We have had a telephone call to say that she has an appointment at hospital on thursday, but we have had no letter as to tell us what we are going for.  As she has been diagnosed what happens next (cant  belive this has come from a smear test).  I have checked on various sites and they all tell you diagnosed stages, its all so confusing i hope someone can give me advice. thanks for reading

    Hi there,

Although my cancer isn't exactly the same as your  mums, being ovarian, I will help in any way I can. Firstly, I have to say that I am not impressed by the way your mum was given her results. Surely if  the smear revealed abnormal cells, your GP  would have referred her to the hospital and they would have made a diagnosis. It is not right that a practice nurse should tell your mum that she has womb cancer (how does she know?) and then say go away and wait for an appointment!

Your mum should have been spoken to by the GP at least and given the chance to ask any questions and to have you with her if possible. I know this is very worrying for you and your mum but until you know for sure please do not look things up on sites because they may not apply to your mum and will cause unnecessary worry.

I take it that you will be going with her to the hospital, so please do not be afraid to ask questions so that you are clear about the diagnosis and any treatment required. It will be a great comfort to your mum to have her caring daughter with her at this time and I wish you all the very best for Thursday.

Please keep in touch and let us know the outcome. If you have any more questions please ask.

                          Take care,

                                Love lizzie xx

hi Lizzie, thanks so much for replying, i am at my wits end with worry.  I too find it strange that a practice nurse would give results but i suppose the GP's are too busy now to do this.  The result came from the lab and i too would have thought she should have gone for more test before a diagnosis, anyway we just have to wait for thursday and i will be with her every step of the way.  To be told this when she has had no symtoms or doesnt feel ill has been another blow.

I had pre cancerous cells and i was reffered to the hospital but i was lucky and just had to have a colposcopy and then went from 6 months check up to now every 3 years.

Hope things are well for you and that you have lots of support,

i will keep in touch and let you know,

thanks again for your kind words
