It's back!

Less than one minute read time.

Yesterday I was told that my breast cancer had spread to my liver. Surgery is not an option, so chemo is all that they can do! Unless some of you know otherwise?! Research is a bit conflicting about the prognosis, my GP wouldn't be drawn on it. So I don't know if I am dying or whether we can contain it!

Hi Helen,  I am really sorry you have received a secondary diagnosis.  I was diagnosed with SBC last July.  I know a little bit about it and lots which relates to me but I think you will find it useful although everyone is different.  I know that they dont tend to perfom surgery where mets have been found because these cells give off an enzyme, so if they removed the tumour(s) in your liver now at some point it would return anyway so it would be a pointless procedure.  Having a secondary cancer is not the same as being terminally ill, it means the cancer is incurable but can be treated, hopefully for some time.  I know they have said chemo is all they can do but how many chemo drugs are there...the options are vast and they will adapt it and change it and try new things as need be.  I have been on Herceptin again for a year now and all the signs are good, the cancer is stable and under control.  It may be that Herceptin isnt an option for you depending on you cancer type but there are other drugs which will do the same for you.  I know many women who have been living with SBC for many many years who felt exactly how you do now and I did too at first.  There is no reason why your cancer cannot be contained and that you and I wont be one of these women years down the line giving advice to someone else newly diagnosed.  If you have one why not try ringing your breast care nurse as they will know what is right for your case and then go from there...one day at a time xxx

    Hi Helen

I was diagnosed with SBC in my liver October 28th 08.  Have had hormone treatment and one lot of chemo - have investigated laser surgery but that depends on how many tumours you have in the liver etc.  There are lots of things on offer so stay strong.

    Cheers
