Moles!

Less than one minute read time.
Hi guys! I am wondering if anyone can tell me,does a mole have to be dark in colour for it to be melanoma??this might sound like a daft question but when i saw the dermatologist when i was having my first mole removed she said that she would generally only be concerned if a mole was dark in colour. I had another mole that i asked her to check on my stomach which she said was fine as it was light in colour, however this mole has increased in size it is a lightish colour with dark flecks through it,it has irregular edges and now has a light ring around it.I was at my gp today and he is referring me to get it removed straight away as he is concerned about it!Im a bit confused as the dermatologist seemed to think it was ok when i seen her b4 xmas as it wasnt dark coloured!! I hope u can make sense of this,i do go on a bit! Gemma xx

well i have seen the dermatologist who thinks its ok but is going to remove it in 4 weeks time!!I thought she was removing it there&then, although im thinking it will probs be ok if shes happy to wait 4 weeks to remove it!

My only worry is that she didnt think the mole on my leg was malignant, she had written in my notes "suspected benign" so was shocked when it came back that it was melanoma! It just goes to show looks can be decieving!

Caroline you are doing the right thing asking to get your moles checked,i wouldnt be waiting until august either!

Julie,I have my fingers crossed for you that you get a good result.

    Hi Gemma,

I know exactly what you mean looks can be deceiving and I had a similar experience with my melanoma. It saw the dermatologist just before Christmas and it wasn't removed until 5 weeks later because she wasn't unduly concerned. Despite the delay it was still very small, so even if it does turn out to be another melanoma I don't think waiting will be harmful. They are probably being extra cautious anyway because you have already had one 'suspected benign' mole removed that turned out to be melanoma. I have certainly found that in my case, and I had some moles looked at today which my GP looked at closely and measured rather than just fobbing me off as another doctor did when I first went about the original mole that turned out to be melanoma. I am watching one of these closely but I am a lot more relaxed after the doctor said it looked ok at the moment.

I got the all clear today, so I am relieved (for now anyway!!)

    Take care, keep us informed.
