Moles!

Less than one minute read time.
Hi guys! I am wondering if anyone can tell me,does a mole have to be dark in colour for it to be melanoma??this might sound like a daft question but when i saw the dermatologist when i was having my first mole removed she said that she would generally only be concerned if a mole was dark in colour. I had another mole that i asked her to check on my stomach which she said was fine as it was light in colour, however this mole has increased in size it is a lightish colour with dark flecks through it,it has irregular edges and now has a light ring around it.I was at my gp today and he is referring me to get it removed straight away as he is concerned about it!Im a bit confused as the dermatologist seemed to think it was ok when i seen her b4 xmas as it wasnt dark coloured!! I hope u can make sense of this,i do go on a bit! Gemma xx

    Hi Gemma,

I think that primarily melanoma tend to be on the dark side, or darkening, but it isn't always so.  My own MM was by no means the darkest that I have, but had become patchy in its colouration, some even have no pigment at all.  There are other things that can resemble melanomas too, but aren't serious.  Your dermatologist will see more melanoma than your GP, so I wouldn't worry too much about your GPs reaction.

    Take care.

    Hi

I had a mole a few years back, that was irregular shape with jagged edges, two different colours light brown with dark brown almost black going through it.

I had it took out as a precaution, but everything came back ok.

I know everyone can be different, it may be nothing to worry about, but you did the right thing by getting it checked.

    Hope everything goes ok.

    Hi gemma,

remember thousands of moles are removed every year and a small percentage come back as anything sinister.

My sons melanoma was very pale , but very irregular and lumpy so i think there is no simple rules to this.

You are doing the right thing and can do no more at the moment. I hope everything goes well for you.
