Coming Back

1 minute read time.

After a year of my mum recovering and check ups, the last thing I expected was for my mum to come back from a standard check up and drop another bomb shell. She was finally getting her confidence back and started back at work- sitting at home by herself all day was driving her a bit stir crazy and she was glad to not be staring at the same 4 walls.

My mum said that she sat in the car for 4 hours before she set off home, she couldn't bear to tell her two children that the disease that ruined our lives for a year has returned. We had finally got back on track- my sister had started a new job as a dental nurse and I had started at university in Leeds.

When she went for her check up, the cancer had moved up to her lung. I burst into tears as soon as mum had finished telling us. Would she be strong enough to beat it again? I had heard horror stories of lung cancer and worked my self up more later that night after googling stories about it.

Mum got transferred to Leeds St James hospital for her operation this time; this meant us all rushing home from work, getting straight in the car and driving to a different city in rush hour every night, This was both physically and mentally exhausting, however there wasn't an option to not see her.

Although the doctors had caught the cancer early, it still meant she had half of each lung cut away. This combined with the scars on her back not being healed meant that when she finally came home (after what felt like years), mum had to be looked after constantly.

However, mum recovered fast and soon after life was back to normal for her. One little blip meant she had to have some cancerous cells in the lungs removed but overall the operation was a success!
