As the nights draw in and each day ends, we get closer and closer to Christmas. It’s a time where we often look back and reflect on the year that’s been and think of the things we’re grateful for and we're grateful for you - the thousands of members who make this site the true community that it is. To mark that, we’d like to be able to give a little something back.

Throughout the Christmas period we’ll be hosting three prize draws which are all free to enter. We’ll be asking you for a few of your favourite Christmas jokes, traditions and more.

This week, we’re giving away a beauty hamper, kindly donated by Boots, who have been partners with Macmillan for 10 years and raised a massive £16.6 million for us. Boots also have specially trained Macmillan Beauty Advisors who offer face-to-face advice to help people cope with the visible side effects of cancer, helping people look and feel more like themselves again. Additionally, Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists are specially trained to understand different types of cancer and treatment, answer questions about medication and signpost to other sources of support. To find out more about these services visit the Boots website.

My crazy family always have a Christmas swim. Most years it’s in the heated pool at Hampton. We dress up in Santa hats and join hands, a big group oh family and friends, and sing “we wish you a merry Christmas” at the top of our voices while jumping round in a circle until we all fall over.
If we aren’t in south west London we find a swim spot wherever we are. A couple of years ago we were on Dartmoor and braved a moorland stream. Brrrr. This year we are in Norfolk. The search is on...

  • My husband's birthday is on Christmas Eve, so we always have a Chinese Takeaway so that we don't have any cooking or washing up that day and then we start Christmas Day with a Bucks Fizz. We play games and if the weather's ok go for a walk on the common in Christmas hats, earrings and jumpers. Someone decorates a tree on the common which is always a lovely discovery xx

Hearing the first line of once in royal David's city sung from Kings on Christmas Eve....that's how I know Xmas has begun (and also it is now too late for a last dash round the shops!)

  • My favourite Christmas tradition is dressing the tree on the first weekend in December. For many years the children would have great fun  as they added decorations they had been bought or had made when they were younger. These days the grandchildren love to help perpetuate the tradition. We have Christmas carols plying and lots of little treats to nibble at as we dress the tree. It’s not sophisticated or themed in any way but it’s full of lovely memories.
