Operation

Less than one minute read time.

Still haven't heard when I am getting my Urostomy, surely it must be in the next 2 weeks.

Can anyone who has been thro' this tell me how long the op takes and how long will I have to stay in hospital.

Hi Adrian I have been waiting for over a year to have a urostomy , there are a couple gen guys on here who have had ity this year so maybe they will answer your blog.

As far as I know the op is about 6 hours and you will be in hosp for atleast 10 days , Recuperation depends on your health , ge etc.

Good luck when you go for it

    Hi Adrian,

For me it was just over a month before I had my op. The time it takes depends on what they have to remove but my op was about 6 and a half hours. Although I knew nothing, fell asleep and woke up a second later when all was finished with a big smile on my face but then I was as high as a kite!

I was lucky with my surgeon, one of the best in the country at my local hospital and I was home on the 6th day after the operation. Average across the UK is between 14 and 21 days and even longer in the USA.

Best to give your consultant a call and speak to him or his secretary and find out when he thinks it will be.

    All the best

    Hi Adrian

I hope you hear soon, I have to admit that I built up a good rapport with the consultant's secretary and used to occasionally phone her to find out if there was any news.  She obviously never told me anything she shouldn't, but I did often get a heads up about when we should officially hear something.

Ed's op was over thirteen hours but don't panic, the first four were to remove a kidney and the last four were to create the neobladder.  So I reckon about five or six.  And incredibly after, on the eighth day he was allowed to sleep at home as long as I had him back in hospital through the day. (he couldn't sleep in hospital) and he was discharged after ten or eleven days.

    Look after yourself.

Thanks Jim, Andrew and Judi I now have some idea of time scales. Looks like I might have the perfect excuse for not doing my Christmas shopping.

    Love to you all

    Hi Adrian,

I had mine in March 2009, it took 8.5 hours approx, so I was told.  This might be because I had lots of lymph nodes removed also.

I was lucky in that I could choose my surgeon and had BUPA cover so I could also choose my own date, Friday 13th LOL.

As for how long you will need to stay in hospital, that depends on how quickly you recover from the op.  They won't let you out till your bowel starts working properly and you are OK with squishy food and can fart and crap OK, sorry too much info.

You can help yourself quite a bit though.  Prior to the op get onto a high protein diet and take some of those high protein drinks if you can.  I used to like the banana flavour one.  Get in some good exercise beforehand if you can.  Walking, swimming and anything else to boost your stamina is going to be a good idea.

After the op, try to get mobile as soon as you feel able.  They will get you out of bed after a couple of days and try to get you walking too.  DON'T OVERDO IT but walking is going to help the bowel recover so I guess the more you are able to do, the quicker you will get out.

In any event, talk to your surgeon or get sound medical advice to check out their thinking too.

    Best of luck mate !

    Cheers,  Mike
