Day 33 Bertie Bassetts Return Journey

Less than one minute read time.

Here we are at the beginning of another week and still no sign of Berts counts going up, At least though he is feeling better and managing to get up and walk round his cell. He had an infection in his line so it has been removed, they will put another in later for his next cycle of chemo which puzzles me as he was only supposed to be having 1 then his BMT. I have an appointment to discuss it with his Consultant on Tuesday so all should become clearer. They want a surgical opinion on his infected toe. They will not be able to do anything until his counts come up anyway especially his platelets.

I am not quite so tired as I was so will keep you posted

    Hello Teri

I know just what you mean about Groundhog Day.Keith's blood count always dips after chemo. This time the chemo made him feel exhausted and also daily trips to hospital tire him out so any days off, there aren't many of those, he spends asleep. We have an appointment this week also so we will see if the more agressive treatment is working if not then I dread to think what the prognosis is as he is not a suitable candidate for transplant. Life seems to be all about blood tests, transfusions and chemo these days. It's like a merry-go-round you want to get off but are scared to.

Hi Tarnie I know exactly what you mean, However Bert's WCC and Neuts  were at zero for 4 weeks before he had his chemo and it's been 5 weeks since then so it feels like forever. They told Bert at the beginning of the year he was unsuitable for transplant  as he was too old (56) and as he was in remission did not need it anyway and he did not have a sibling donor. However, changed their mind as he relapsed and developed Myelodysplasia which they told ut earlier in the year he did not have and again they have changed their minds and said he has had it all along. Is Keith on oral chemo as he is at home? or has he finished his chemo for the time being. Bert's Neuts and WCC came up yesterday to 0.1 but I am waiting as last time they came up to 0.4 and then fell back to 0 again. I am going to see his Consultant today for a chat I have tried so hard to keep positive but there is a little niggling doubt in my mind this time and I cannot put my finger on the reason why so I am hoping she wil be able to put mu mind at rest.

Take care of Keith and also of yourself

    Hello Teri

Hope you got some answers today, the waiting takes it's toll too on everyone.

Keith has chemo injections once a month for five consecutive days, he has a severe skin reaction to the injections which makes it very uncomfortable. His neuts have not risen above 0.1 in several months and he has been in hospital four times this year with infections this has usually been in the week following his chemo when everything seems to drop, blood count, platelets etc. In between this he is at hospital almost every other day for blood tests ,as I said exhausting.

I agree with you about the seats, sitting on them for hour after hour is very painful I will have to start taking a cushion with me.

Keep on going and look after yourself.

    Hi Tarnie

Bert is infection free I think for the most days since he went in this time we are half way through week 5 and his counts are back at zero, I don't understand how Keith is able to have his chemo and be at home they won't even let Bert out of his room, Still I suppose every where must be different. Bert's counts have been zero since about July and he did not get any infection until hr went into hospital, he was fine at home. We are expecting a bmb at the beginning  of the week to see if he has cone back into remission and can have his transplant but to be honest this time I have not got a good feeling about it all lets hope I am proven to be wrong.

    Take care Love Teri
