Bertie Bassetts Journey through AML

1 minute read time.
We were on a much needed holiday when we got our first clue that all was not well. Bert had had Bronchitis all through our holiday and against his better judgement he went to see the Dr the day we were due to fly home. The Dr in Turkey was amazing done loads of tests and told us after only 45 mins we were told that his white cell count was really low at 1.2 and that we were to see a Dr on our arrival home. He was admitted on the 15th of September and we were given the diagnosis on the 18th the day after his 56th birthday. His count dropped rapidly to 0.1 in a couple of days but then stopped at that. The Dr had told us that his chemo would start the following week. However she changed her mind, and sent him home after 2 weeks of antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals, which was just as well as I developed Laryngitis and a chest infection. I was amazed that he never got any infection. We went to the out patient clinic 2 weeks later and were told he was stable to come back in 2 weeks. on our return we were told he had to be admitted on Mon 2nd Nov despite the fact that his blood was still stable and he was to be starten on Chemo on Tue 3rd. The 1st lot of chemo mad him look dreadful I was not expecting that. However, he did look a little better the next day although he was very breathless and had tracking up his arm where the chemo had been put in. But all of that turned out to be ok. Here we are on day 4 gutted to find out that his brothers are not match for Bone Marrow, that left him feeling very upset and down in the dumps. So we will see what tomorrow brings Goodnight

I arrived at the hospital at lunchtime yesterday to find Bert lying in bed looking like a lobster on asking a nurse to take his temp I discovered it was 39.5 I dread to think how much higher it would have gone had I not arrived as he said he felt ok. Still no further forward on the infection he now needs a CT scan of his liver/gall bladder as they seem to thing it could be coming from the Gall bladder. They have added in IV antifungals to try and help settle his temp though.so fingers crossed. The ultrasound scans and x-rays were all fine, The Urologist came to see him Re his PSA being high but everything there is also fine which we were delighted to hear at least I was Bert did not even know what they were looking for.

So here we go on another day hopefully 1 of the tests will show whatever is causing the problem with the pain and causing the high temp.

Sorry to hear that bert is still going through it with the infections, bet he;s geting really fed up with it all. When mum was being treated with antifungal for her aspergillus I went in one day and she was lying in the dark, but by the light that just opening the door shone into the room from the corridor I could see that her face was glowing red. I immediately alerted one of the nurses and it transpired that it was a reaction to the iv antibiotivs they were giving her. She had to be treated with something prior to them for future doses and they slowed the iv down from 2 hours to be administered and gave it to her over 5 or six.  You have probably found out what the cause is by now, but thought it may be worth mentioning just in case.

    Keep me posted,

Love to you both lynn XX

    Hiya Teri

Just sent you a private message.

Oh dear, Bert is certainly having a rotten time isn't he? I so feel for him and anybody else including my mum of course who go through the infection side of things.

I wish we could do more for them.

At the moment, mum is doing well and is neutropenic but at home. Fingers crossed that she won't get an infection this time.

All my love to you both

    Binnie xx

hi terri, poor bert really is going through it this time isn't he. lets hope the new antibiotics work as its awful to see them so poorly just to let you know i am thinking of bert and reading your blog all the time its really useful to compare how my dad is getting on with what bert is going through. Dad on his second lot of chemo waiting now for his neutraphils  to drop then the worry begins. He asks all the time about Bert so lets hope i can soon tell him some better news. shelley.
