Bertie Bassetts Journey through AML

1 minute read time.
We were on a much needed holiday when we got our first clue that all was not well. Bert had had Bronchitis all through our holiday and against his better judgement he went to see the Dr the day we were due to fly home. The Dr in Turkey was amazing done loads of tests and told us after only 45 mins we were told that his white cell count was really low at 1.2 and that we were to see a Dr on our arrival home. He was admitted on the 15th of September and we were given the diagnosis on the 18th the day after his 56th birthday. His count dropped rapidly to 0.1 in a couple of days but then stopped at that. The Dr had told us that his chemo would start the following week. However she changed her mind, and sent him home after 2 weeks of antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals, which was just as well as I developed Laryngitis and a chest infection. I was amazed that he never got any infection. We went to the out patient clinic 2 weeks later and were told he was stable to come back in 2 weeks. on our return we were told he had to be admitted on Mon 2nd Nov despite the fact that his blood was still stable and he was to be starten on Chemo on Tue 3rd. The 1st lot of chemo mad him look dreadful I was not expecting that. However, he did look a little better the next day although he was very breathless and had tracking up his arm where the chemo had been put in. But all of that turned out to be ok. Here we are on day 4 gutted to find out that his brothers are not match for Bone Marrow, that left him feeling very upset and down in the dumps. So we will see what tomorrow brings Goodnight

Bert not any better today if no improvement tomorrow then yet another antibiotic will be added. He also had an allergic reaction to platelets tonight so needed anti-histamines and now will not get his blood until tomorrow. Temp up again, dairrhoea off and on all day long so not a very good day. Stool samples away today to check for blood as he has a very low Hb. Will keep you all posted

Bert looks dreadful I have been at the hospital since 10am  the C Diff is making him really poorly and he has a really sore bottom with having so much diarrhoea, the skin is very badly broken so he is hurting when he sits up, so much so that he allowed me to put cream on for him. The Dr said today that she had given me duff info re his CT scan she told me it was ok but on checking it's not he has an infection in his lung, not sure if it is fungal or not yet. He is already on 5 antibiotics and 3 antifungals so they are having a look to see what to do next. He was give 3 units of blood today so hopefully will at least feel a bit better tomorrow. I am tired his temp has been not too bad today as they have given him paracetamol 4 hourly to try and keep it under control, which seems to be working as it went from 38.7 down to 35.3 and back up and down. Keeps getting nosebleed too but his platelets are at 30 so should be ok with them

    Hello Teri

I'm sorry about Bert having infections and having to take so many tablets. Hopefully it will get better soon and hope the anti fungals etc get rid of the lung infection.

Hope you are getting some rest, I know it's hard. I feel for my dad too as he must be always restless with mum being ill.

I know she is doing fine, but it must be a worry still for him.

Let me know how he is when you can

It's now day 5 of Bert's C Diff and it is no better so the Consultant has decided it is time to try a different antibiotic that will hopefully help. his lung infection however is clearing up and his bloods are coming back to a more reasonable level which may help fight the c diff as well. His Temp ab BP stayed normal for 48 hours but decided to come back up this morning so more cultures and another chest x-ray were done results tomorrow he has problems passing urine again so perhaps thats what is causing his temp to play up again.

Bert s looking so much better today. He still has some diarrhoea but is getting better as they have changed his antibiotics. Antifungals (IV) have been stopped as has his (IV) antibiotics so we are down to 3 oral antibiotics and 1 oral antifungal so provided his temp behaves and his diarrhoea stops hecan come home possibly on Tuesday which is good news as we have an appointment to discuss BMT on Thursday in Glasgow.

    Will keep you posted
