Bertie Bassetts Journey through AML

1 minute read time.
We were on a much needed holiday when we got our first clue that all was not well. Bert had had Bronchitis all through our holiday and against his better judgement he went to see the Dr the day we were due to fly home. The Dr in Turkey was amazing done loads of tests and told us after only 45 mins we were told that his white cell count was really low at 1.2 and that we were to see a Dr on our arrival home. He was admitted on the 15th of September and we were given the diagnosis on the 18th the day after his 56th birthday. His count dropped rapidly to 0.1 in a couple of days but then stopped at that. The Dr had told us that his chemo would start the following week. However she changed her mind, and sent him home after 2 weeks of antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals, which was just as well as I developed Laryngitis and a chest infection. I was amazed that he never got any infection. We went to the out patient clinic 2 weeks later and were told he was stable to come back in 2 weeks. on our return we were told he had to be admitted on Mon 2nd Nov despite the fact that his blood was still stable and he was to be starten on Chemo on Tue 3rd. The 1st lot of chemo mad him look dreadful I was not expecting that. However, he did look a little better the next day although he was very breathless and had tracking up his arm where the chemo had been put in. But all of that turned out to be ok. Here we are on day 4 gutted to find out that his brothers are not match for Bone Marrow, that left him feeling very upset and down in the dumps. So we will see what tomorrow brings Goodnight

    Hi Teri

Sorry about your fall. Hope you are ok and won't be on crutches too long.

Hows Bert today?  he is having a hard time isn't he? Hope he feels a lot better soon.

I'm a bit mad at myself as I have been out since 2pm today to watch a friend doing a cycle race and we ended up in the pub, and just got home at 10.00pm, a bit worse for wear.

I was planning on ringing mum tonight to ask how she is, but seeing as it's too late, will ring tomorrow.

I'm sure she is ok, otherwise I'm sure dad would have left a message on my mobile phone.

Love to Bert, sending some positive vibes both your way.

Thanks Belinda I am feeling much better, am managing without crutches. Bert. However, still has an infection temp still going up and BP going down again they don't seem to know what is causing ir but suspect that it's a bowel infection they are giving him more antibiotics which hopefully will help.

Glad to hear your mum is still doing well  and I am sure you had a good time last night hope you don't suffer today

    Love Teri

Bert has another infection in his chest this time, he is still being treated for the infection in his gut. As always Temp high BP very low I know this is all normal stuff to be happening but none the less it does not make it easy to watch him go through it. He is looking miserable.

Hi teri, bert is really going through it this time and with 2 infections its not surprising to hear that he is feeling low and miserable..Just to let you both know you are in my thoughts, and I hope that you are feeling a little less sore from your fall

    Hi Lynn

Bert was looking better today at least he managed to stay awake all afternoon, they sent him for a chest and tummy x-ray, the Dr was in while I was there and he mentioned that it could be his gall bladder or liver but his scan was fine last week so I will maybe find out tomorrow. His temp went back up tonight before I left so it was back on with the fan to cool him down it always seems to go up at night time. I am feeling much better still hobbling but otherwise ok

    Love Teri
