The biopsy…a training opportunity

1 minute read time.

The MRI went well. An out of hours late evening appointment just 4 days after the referral letter was sent. Neither nurse could get the cannula in. I gave them five attempts then in the machine for a bimetric scan. Just 10 hours later a phone call with results. MRI has found changes that need further investigation and the biopsy is booked next week.

More chats with AI. I forgot to ask any questions so in the dark about what was found and what are the biopsy details. Can’t tell my wife much, clueless myself at this point. Lack of information equals more stress, so ask questions at every turn is my new motto.

The biopsy Tuesday morning one of three men sitting in the waiting room. Questions, questions, questions. My new motto is getting results. Very informed now. MRI had two leisons both PIRADS 4 size 11mm and 13mm. The biopsy would be a local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsy. It will target the areas found on the MRI and then a grid sample. In total 18-22 samples will be taken.

The biopsy was straightforward, I did let a doctor under training do it, took a bit longer as she was being given instructions on how to locate the needle and position the ultrasound. Well you have to do it for real on someone, so why not me? I was asked if I wanted to watch the screen midway through. Yes please, big mistake. I could always feel the push through as the core was taken, but seeing the needle stretch the flesh and push through, the anticipation of pain, wouldn’t recommend watching!

All done, cup of coffee and off home. Told expect results in 7-10 days. I wish they used real timings. I’m sure they knew it would be longer at the time. They must see how long today’s results have taken. They review the latest results every day.

No blood in pee, not really any discomfort. Starting the longest wait.
