A short road

Things are changing...

We had had our first Macmillan nurse visit and it was as if the weight of the world was lifted from my shoulders. I hadn't known what a care package was or that I could have had support. She managed to do in 10 minutes on the phone what I'd been trying to do for weeks.

I had last managed to get a GP out to my Dad back in October and when ever I rang and asked for a visit I had to explain the problem and a prescription was faxed to my chemist

Dad went downhill very suddenly last week, he became incontinent, starting twitching and throwing his legs and arms around but the pain seemed to have disappeared. He was taken into hospital on Thursday and has a pleural drain.

It does seem though that he is getting to the end very quickly now. I visit and he's sleeping fitfully. What's sad is that if I kiss him, hold his hand or stroke his arm it disturbs him and after the initial recognition he gets distressed and starts thrashing about.

I started letting Dad's 'people' know that he was very poorly and wouldn't be at Stamp/Engine/Steam/Museum meetings and was overwelmed by their support. My friends, in the time I have been at home looking after Dad have vanished but his friends have been wonderful. If he gets home I've offers of meals, someone to walk my dog, do the shopping or sit with Dad.

People are good
