Awaiting scans - terrified

Hello all,

I’m having an ultrasound tomorrow and my urgent care appointment is on Friday to see whether my symptoms are being caused by womb cancer. I’m terrified. I’m almost 42 and post-menopausal (yes it’s early). Have been bleeding on & off since mid Feb. It’s probably because of hormones as I’m on HRT (since December), but I’m sick with worry. Any tips on how to calm down?

Much appreciated. x

  • Hi mamaG84, welcome to the womb cancer group which is full of wonderful supportive women who are currently going through, or have already gone through, exactly what you are currently facing.

I was diagnosed with womb cancer in December following a post menopausal bleed, had CT and MRI scans and then hysterectomy in January.

I found the waiting for scans and results the hardest part but as many of the women on here advised me to do, I had to take one day at a time. If I thought too far ahead and started catastrophising it made everything worse.
I phoned the Macmillan helpline a lot sometimes just to have a good old cry or to ask lots of questions. I always felt better after calling them.
I tried to get out every day and go for a walk and bizarrely we started doing jigsaws as when I was getting really anxious, it made me just sit and concentrate on something sense.
you are in the hands of very experienced health professionals who deal with this all the time. Once I knew the plan I did feel better.

  • Hi MamaG84

    Welcome to the Womb group.

Am sorry to hear that you have had some post menopausal bleeding.

I know that it is scary to go through the testing but there can be other causes for your symptoms. it may well be due to your HRT but they always like to rule out the most serious potential causes first.

The ultrasound is to take a look inside to see if anything that might be causing the symptoms is there. They normally measure the thickness of the endometrium. If anything is seen on the ultrasound that needs further investigation then it would be normal to be have a hysteroscopy/ biopsy.

During testing it is hard to focus on much else and it is naturally a worrying time. I found trying to keep to some normal routines helped and also at times just accept that it was natural to feel a bit all over the place. Talking to people around me did help. Also try to focus on what you do know rather than what you fear may be going on. At the moment you have had some bleeding and that needs checking out. You have done the right thing in going to the doctor and the doctor has put you on the urgent pathway. This is routine for symptoms that could in some people lead to a cancer diagnosis.

I had a phone call the day after my ultrasound to come in for further testing so things can move quite quickly. It sounds like you should have a better idea of what is going on by Friday.

I hope that tomorrow goes ok for you.

We do have the Support Line available from 8am-8pm everyday if talking things through would help.

If there is anything you need. please do ask
