Biopsy under GA

Hi just thought I would let you know that I had my biopsy under a GA yesterday. The hospital staff were fantastic …so kind and professional, I was so impressed. The surgeon came to see me afterwards and tbh I think I was a bit bombed out after the GA as it is all a bit of a blur. Anyway she told me that my womb lining looked normal for a woman of my age. I asked if it looked healthy ( I know it’s a strange question but I was a bit bombed out as I said !! ) and she replied yes. They had asked me to agree to possibly having a marina coil put in during the procedure if it was deemed necessary but she told me that they had decided against the coil. I looked at my clinical notes which said …’Hysteroscopy, atrophic cavity seen, biopsy taken, minimal tissue and will likely come back as inadequate which is reassuring’. What in earth does that mean ? Surely a sample needs to be adequate ??? Does anyone know what this means ? Sorry for the rambling post xx

  • Atrophic cavity means a thin endometrium lining. They seem to worry more about thickened linings. The fact that there isnt much tissue I suspect means there wasnt much to biopsy. I'm not a health care professional though so I'd suggest speaking to either your gp or the McMillan phone line. After the biopsy they'll probably tell you more.

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply ..I kind of thought the same as you ( after talking to my mate Dr Google !!) but was originally advised to have a biopsy as my lining was seen to be too thick on the scans. Like you said I need to just wait but am not good at that !! Xx

  • Hi Figgy

I am glad that the hospital staff were so good yesterday.

Atrophic cavity is a normal, usually benign condition where the lower levels of hormone post menopause means the lining of the endometrium becomes thinner. An inadequate tissue amount is just describing that because the lining was thin they were not able to get as many samples as they would if you had a thickened lining. So this could be seen as reassuring because your lining is not thickened so a lesser amount of tissue was available to biopsy.

If the lining had shown to be thickened or had concerning features then the coil may have been an option. The effect of the coil would have been to reduce the hyperplasia- however your lining is thin so there is no need.

The main thing is the lining is thin and that samples were taken. Hopefully these will come back to show no concerns.

It can be tough to wait for results so do give the Support Line a call if it would help to talk things through.
