Hi my name is Carol. I'm 66 had a full hysterectomy 17 weeks ago. Due to finding out i had endometrial cancer, was very stressful going from the doctors all the way through investigations, loads of appointments etc. Was terrified about my operation as I'm very over weight and don't walk well due to surgery years ago.
Anyway got through my operation well. Had it done salpingo robotic surgery. Recovery has been good. Just wanted to know if anyone has gone through this and is having hot flushes and mood swings. Not been told much and wanted to know what the lack of hormones does to your body. Heard a few things but don't know what to believe....
Hi Carol , i had a full hysterectomy nearly 5wks ago now. Im 60yrs old. Ive just finished the blood thinner injections so just getting back to normal. Still feeling bloated and a little light headed. I do still have mood swings and a couple of occasions feeling too warm. It could be down to a feeling under the weather with a chesty cough tho. Ive been offered the flu jab & covid one so im having them next week. Im awaiting info about future checkups. I had grade 1 endometrial womb cancer & they found a polyp too. Hope you get some answers soon.
Hi Carol
Welcome to the Womb group.
I am sorry to hear that you have had a stressful time going through a diagnosis and then surgery for your endometrial cancer. I am glad that you are recovering ok.
I didn't particularly have any hot flushes after surgery. I did however have some mood swings- these I put down to the whole cancer journey. I think for me some of my after effects were more to do with the chemo rather than the surgery.
Are you having regular check ups now? I had them every 12 weeks for 2 years- if you do then maybe you could bring up this with you cancer nurse.
You could also give the Macmillan Support Line a call and talk things through with one of the nurses.

Hi Carol I am age 70 and had the same surgery for the same reason in June this year. I had a month of blood thinner injections and after a slow recovery started to feel better at 4 months. I am now having low mood low energy and yes occasionally flushes. I have been told I cannot have HRT so I presume I will be put on antidepressants at my next GP appointment in a couple of weeks. After my diagnosis I researched womens health and have learnt alot most recently I learnt that my dry eyes I have had for years are hormonal along with dry skin and hair loss which I have at present. If you are into podcasts I highly recommend Dr Louise Newson along with Liz Earle I listen on Spotify but I am sure they are on other platforms. Womens hormones are a hot topic at the moment. I highly recommend you buy Liz Earles book A better second half this will answer so many questions on women's health I found it so informative. Sending my best x
Hi Carol, i had my laparoscopic hysterectomy almost 4 years ago at age 62, having gone through the menopause about 5 years before that. I didn’t have any hot flushes post op. I also didn’t particularly have any mood swings related to the op as I was too busy trying to get my head round having radiotherapy and brachytherapy and getting through it! Out of curiosity, what was your grade and stage post op?
Hi Carol, it's hard after a full hysterectomy. I had a full hysterectomy in March and still experiencing mood swings so I think what you are feeling is normal. I was told to continue with my hrt (oestrogen only) as a a few months ago I was also diagnosed with oesteoporosis. I think you need to take things slowly and expect that recovery can take a very long time. I find i am also angry with people and the smallest thing upsets me. Hoping it is just part of the recovery process. Be kind to yourself. Hope things get better for you soon.
Hello Carol, I had a robotic, laparoscopic surgery on Oct 8 with little pain and pretty much asymptomatic. I am 81. I had no flushes. What I do have however is fatigue and a bout of feeling sorry for myself. I have a hard time getting to sleep and when I do, its in fits and spurts. That's because I know what my future holds as far as treatment and whether or not it would be successful in some fashion particularly with my stage 3 diagnosis. At my age, I don't know how much even modern medicine can fix me. Anxiety is quite common I think. Do well, my friend.
I don’t doubt at all that some ladies have post hysterectomy symptoms like hot flushes and mood swings - however I would just like to point out that it’s totally normal to have low mood/anxiety/mood swings post cancer which aren’t hormonal in origin and can just be down to the stress and upheaval of the whole experience. Learning to live life after cancer, learning to get our heads round “what the heck was all that about” and moving on from it can be be something with which we need help - which is why most if not all hospitals run life after cancer courses - either as full days or weekly sessions - and I’d suggest that it’s worth looking into that option before meds. Some people need meds for their mental health, and that’s okay, but it’s worth trying to find out first if other support may help.
Hi Carol — you’ve been through so much, and it’s great to hear your recovery has been going well after such a stressful journey. Hot flushes and mood swings are actually very common after a hysterectomy, especially when hormones drop suddenly, so you’re definitely not alone in this.A lot of people find it helpful to focus not only on the physical recovery but also on general wellness and stress support — it really makes the emotional side easier to handle. I came across this article with some useful wellness insights that might help you navigate this stage a bit more comfortably:
