I am 51 years old and very healthy and other than a C-section 27years ago have never had any health issues.
I am post menopausal (2years) and suddenly had abdominal discomfort and bleeding. Due to feeling bloated especially on the left went to GP.
2 week cancer pathway - Have had a vaginal ultrasound which identified thickening of the uterine wall. Due to not a clear view of ovaries had an abdominal ultrasound then a hystroscopy during which a biopsy was taken. No polyps and everyone kept asking if I am on HRT which I found strange.
Received a copy of letter send to my GP after first appointment and ultrasound with plan of second ultrasound and hystroscopy. It stated a uterine wall thickness of 15.3mm which according to my research is significant in women of don’t take HRT.
I continue to feel discomfort on my left side and bloated. Before the letter I was more relaxed and now I can’t help but feel more anxious as I wait for biopsy results. I have not discussed it with friends or family because I rather have clear answers regardless of the results.
Reaching out for support and guidance from others who might have experienced similar.
Hi Janie
Welcome to the Womb group.
I am sorry to hear that you have had some post menopausal bleeding and also been having some discomfort/bloating.
For any bleeding after the menopause ladies are normally put on the 2 week urgent pathway and as you have found- the first test is the ultrasound.
In your case the endometrial lining is thicker than they would like. They asked about HRT as this can affect the thickness. Anything more than 5mm is considered the cut off for further investigation in ladies who are post menopausal. It is normal to be offered the hysteroscopy and what they are doing is looking to rule out cancer and to see if there is anything there like polyps etc that could be a cause of the bleeding.
In your case they have found hyperplasia- a thickened lining. There are different types of hyperplasia and some are more concerning than others. They do the biopsy to check whether there is any cancer present.
I can understand why you have not yet spoken to family as you want clear answers. My biopsy results took around a week to come back so hopefully you will not have to wait too long.
Waiting for results is always a worrying time and if talking things through would help, then please do give the Support Line a call. They are there everyday from 8am-8pm.
Jane
Thank you so much for your reply and explanation. I guess as humans we are not great with uncertainty.
I hope that going back to teaching after a week break will keep my mind busy.
I have been reading through posts and it does make me feel better that others have had similar experiences and feelings.
Thank you again x
