Hi, I’ve been reading this forum for days now and trying hard not to worry.
I have a history of endometriosis which I had laparoscopy for and have been on the Depo provera injection for 7 years (periods stopped). I am 46 and have had HRT for past two years due to perimenopausal symptoms.
A month ago I started to bleed with small clots that lasted three days. Saw my GP who put me on the two week pathway and stopped my Depo provera injection and HRT that day ( was due a Depo injection the next day) I then had abdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds and the hospital called that afternoon to say they saw thickened endometrium and I am booked for Hysteroscopy this coming Sunday.
I know that Googling is the worst thing to do and I just feel like someone here may have had the same experience as me as my mind is in overdrive right now
Sorry to hear you've had to join this club.
My experience was slightly different to yours as I wasn't on HRT.
Best wishes for you hysteroscopy.
H
Thank you for your reply. I don’t want to keep talking about this with my family and am getting on with my job and life but it is constantly on my mind x
Hi Thinnkingoutloud
Welcome to the Womb group.
I am sorry to hear that you have had some bleeding but you have done the right thing in getting it checked out.
Hyperplasia (a thickened lining) can have different causes. One type is not a cause for immediate concern and can resolve in time by itself. There is another type that can cause problems in the future and could in time become cancerous and this type would normally need treatment.
Endometrial Hyperplasia: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
It would be normal for them to stop the hormone treatments while you are being checked over.
The hysteroscopy is basically a tiny camera that they will use to have a closer look at the lining of your womb. They would normally do some biopsies while they are in there. The biopsies are to check for/rule our any cancer.
it is only the biopsy results that can rule out or confirm any cancer being present. My results came through about a week after mine was done.
I think the thing to hold on to at the moment is that you have got checked at the first signs of bleeding and if there is any cancer present, early stage endometrial cancer does tend to be a very treatable cancer.
Having these tests is obviously a worrying time and if it helps please do give the Support Line a call. They are there from 8am-8pm each day.
Good luck for Sunday. If there is anything else you need, then you know where we are.
Jane
As Jane says, there are many causes of thickened womb lining so wait untill you get the results of your hysteroscopy.
With regard to the hysteroscopy, have you arranged any form of pain relief for that in advance? Most hospitals offer local anaesthetic injection and/or gas & air. I have regular biopsies so always have pain relief. Focus on what you know now and not what 'might be' and take each stage at a time. Sunday will soon be here and hopefully the results will show there is nothing to worry about. Good luck for Sunday. The procedure doesn't last that long.
A lady called from the hospital to ask can I come in on 1st June for a Hysteroscopy and then I received a letter just stating the appointment and time. No other info.
From what I have read on here and the nhs website, I should take some paracetamol or ibuprofen an hour before my appointment.
I feel like a fraud on here when others have diagnoses and as others say, there are other reasons for the thickened lining. The online community here have helped me so much in the past with both parents and it helps to read/hear other experiences xx
I don't wish to scare you but the general advice of 'take a paracetamol' doesn't necessarily work for a lot of women. You may be fine but most hospitals will provide pain relief, for a very good reason. The NHS leaflets/website don't necessarily advise for every situation. It can be quite painful for a lot of people and if you have the pain relief, the process tends to go much more smoothly. For example, I was in so much pain with my first hysteroscopy they had to abandon it and re-schedule for another with pain relief. There is still time to contact the hospital and/or your GP to find out in advance if they offer such.
Thank you Lolabear, I will definitely call the gynae department tomorrow morning and ask for some more info. I would rather they get it done on Sunday and not have to go back for GA or wait any longer so hopefully I can tolerate it with whatever is offered to me fingers crossed. I assumed from nhs site the para/ibuprofen may be enough!
You are doing the right thing. Better to be prepared and get it done soon rather than wait longer for them to make another appointment, just in case. If you can't stand the thought of an injection into your cervix (only last a few seconds mind), then even gas & air can really help. The gas & air it painless and really helps you focus on your breathing and kind of helps you rise above what's happening down below.
During the procedure they have to open the cervix to allow the instruments in (tiny camera and something for take the biopsy), so it can be painful, particularly for women who have cervical stenosis - that's a kind of closed/semi closed cervix, as I had. I was also advised by a Nurse that the injection helps the cervix to open/relax a bit, which is good. The very best of wishes to you for Sunday.
Thank you so much x
i hope you are doing well yourself x
I am on the hormone treatment, as I am high risk for surgery and it's going well - so far....thanks for asking.
