Hello I’m new here. I’ve just had a hysterectomy because of womb cancer. Post op analysis showed it had spread to the cervix. And a lymph node but my question is about the cervix.
Just before going to the specialist for the first womb biopsy, I had a regular smear test and swabs which came back clear.
im confused about why it was clear, when the womb cancer had spread to the cervix. Are the two cancers (womb and cervix) so different that testing is only for one type?
Hi Captainloo, when I asked this question (as my post op histology showed this), I was told that smear tests can only check the underside of the cervix, not the top of the cervix. The cancerous cells that were found in my post op histology were on top of my cervix.
Hey thanks for the reply, ok yeah that makes sense. I guess I’m lucky I got referred anyway. I was pretty relaxed after the smear came back clear that it wasn’t anything serious.
How are you doing now Marmitefan? Sounds like we are in similar boats. I have to say I prefer Vegemite though :-)
Hi Captainloo
MarmiteFan59 is correct in what she says about the smear test. Cervical cancer is a different cancer to womb cancer, and the smear test is not a diagnostic test for cervical cancer-it’s initially a check to test for the hpv virus, and the cervix is just given a “sweep” for that to test the cells there. If the virus isn’t found, there’s not usually any further testing.
