Hi everyone

I've just been told last week after having a hysterectomy that they've found cancer in my cervix, nothing on what, type ect. As its getting sent to somewhere else to be looked at.

I've since had scans and more blood tests.

To say the least I'm afraid and a million and one things running through my head, just such a shit feeling!

  • Hi RAP

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I hope that you are recovering ok from your hysterectomy.

Was the hysterectomy for endometrial cancer/womb cancer? if so I wonder if it is your post op results that showed the cancer in your cervix. If so that would be a stage 2 womb cancer. If this is the case then the cancer looks like it was contained. The testing is to confirm that.

If the hysterectomy was for another reason then it would still be normal for anything removed to be sent to pathology. The scans and further blood tests are just to get a full picture of exactly what is going on and where. Once they know that they can recommend if you will need any other follow up treatment to your surgery.

It is possible for a cancer to start in the cervix. It is also possible for an endometrial cancer to spread to the cervix.

I can understand you feeling afraid but try maybe to focus on what you actually know at the moment, rather than all the what ifs. It is hard, but try to focus on recovering from the surgery.

It sounds like they are being really thorough and that is a good thing. I hope you do not have to wait too ling for some clarification.

In the meantime we are here if there is anything you need. We also have the Support Line if you want to talk things through.

  • Thank you for getting back to me!

No the hysterectomy was for another reason and they left the ovaries and I'm 7 weeks post op now. I did have a abnormal smear 9 months ago.

They are needing to have a MDT meeting then said I would find out what the next steps after this and all the information!

I've also been allocated a gynecology oncologist nurse.

Just scary as I just went through this 2 1/2 years ago with my mam, and I lost her!

  • Hi RAP

Yes, it is scary, especially when you are not expecting it. I am sorry to hear about your Mum.

What would likely happen now is that you will have the scans and the blood tests and then the MDT will look at the whole picture to see if the cancer has been removed completely and whether or not you may need a bit of follow up treatment. So they are looking at the stage (where the cancer is) and grade (the kind of cancer and how it behaves) and a few other bits.

If you had been diagnosed with cervical cancer before the surgery- this would have been done before- so they are now just getting the whole picture.

It may be worth posting in the cervical cancer forum and getting some advice there.

Your CNS (gynae oncology nurse) will be able to offer you support and answer any questions about your treatment and what will happen next. The MDT tends to happen once a week and once they have the results from your scan they are likely to be to clarify what needs to happen next. This could be monitoring/check ups or may involve some further treatment.

I hope that you get some answers soon, but in the meantime if there is anything you need, please do ask.
