scan

Hello all

So while I was at the GP for something else and she was waiting for a colleague to come in, I mentioned the spotting and asked if I should reset my menopause clock.  That afternoon, she called me and said I had been referred to gynaecology and would have a scan which I had yesterday.  Was told womb lining nice and thin and just a couple of fibroids.

Spotting has started up again today.  I though the scan would be the end of it, but does anyone know if it is definitive or will there still be a gynae appointment?

Thanks

  • Hi Georgia

Was the referral on the urgent pathway?

There can be a variety of possible causes for the bleeding and I would imagine that you will still see the gynaecologist to determine what is causing it and whether any treatment is needed.

Fibroids can sometimes cause bleeding.  Sometimes bleeding can be due to atrophy (thinning lining) as ladies approach menopause- due to the drop in oestrogen. Sometimes it can be due to recently starting HRT and the body getting used to it.

So basically- it is good that hyperplasia has been ruled out, but there was still some bleeding, spotting has started again and they still need to find the cause. I would imagine there would be a follow up appointment.

    Good Luck

    Jane

  • Hi Jane - I have been on HRT patches for about 2 years and not had a problem with it.  I had my last period just under a year before the first episode of spotting.  I plotted the spotting in my diary thinking it might be cyclical and my body's last go at menstruation but it's off and on and not showing any pattern.  Sometimes it's bright red like a normal period but most of the time dark brown and thick.  Just over the past couple of days I've had a lot of horrible twisting, pinching type pain just above my pubic bone and slightly to the left.  It kept me awake last night.

The sonographer said I win the prize for having the most tilted womb he has seen in his entire career!  Scans are extremely uncomfortable for me and sometimes painful.

The GP said she had referred me to gynaecology as well as the scan.  Probably because of my mother having had womb cancer relatively young.

  • Sounds really uncomfortable for you. Good idea to keep the diary.

Hopefully you can get seen by the gynaecologist soon and get some answers.
