Thickening of cervix

Hi all. New here.

I had an ultrasound and was told there's thickening in the cervix wall, they have put me on the cancer pathway for a biopsy. Now it's the anxious wait for the appointment and then the results. I have seen the repot and read the endometrial measures 8mm, I'm not sure what that means.

I have had no period since having a baby in October. Some bleeding end of November, nothing since. I see the symptoms for cervical cancer is bleeding, this is what is confusing me.

Some days I feel like my period is coming but nothing.

I'm so worried.

  • Hi AnxiouD

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I see you have already had a reply from Sarah in the Cervical cancer forum that I am sure you will have found reassuring.

Where there are any symptoms that could potentially mean cancer they always put you on the urgent pathway. They always try to rule out the most serious potential reasons first and that is what they are doing.

An endometrial thickness of 8mm is perfectly normal in a premenopausal lady. They measure the endometrium as routine because hyperplasia (thickened lining) can sometimes be a sign of endometrial cancer. If the lining is shown to be thickened then a biopsy would be done. Sounds like what they are doing with you- a thickened cervix so a routine biopsy to rule out anything serious.

Thickening in the cervical wall could have a variety of causes- eg; polyps but I wonder if there is any connection with your recent childbirth.

Congratulations by the way- my Grandson was born in October too. I know his Mum is still waiting for her cycle to return to normal and she has been told it may just take a couple more months for things to settle.

I know it is a worrying time, but hopefully you will get some answers soon and then can get back to enjoying your new baby. if talking things through would help, please do give the Support Line a call.

  • Thank you for your reply Jane.

That's lovely to hear you have a new grandchild. I am bottle feeding and thought I'd be back to normal with my cycle by now, although it wasn't 100% normal before I fell pregnant, which made me think I was going through the change.

Is your daughter breast feeding - if you don't mind me asking?

I'm trying to keep positive that I don't have any other symptoms, apart from no period for a few months and a bit of weight loss. I have read stories of others who have had horrendous symptoms and still got through the nasty disease.

If my body is trying to have a period with no bleeding, then surely there will be a thicker lining??!

    Thanks again x

  • Daughter in law is bottle feeding.

She was told it can take a while for periods to return to what they were- up to 6 months, depending on bottle or breast feeding. Health visitor was not concerned. She has gone back on the contraceptive pill.

I do wonder how much of it for you could be to do with the baby and hormones settling.

Although younger women can sometimes have endometrial cancer, it is far more common post menopausal. And bleeding is often the symptom that makes ladies seek help. With cervical cancer, again bleeding is a symptom.

Being a new Mum, I wonder also if that may be partly the cause of a little weight loss.

Your endometrial lining is a normal one and it is normal for it to change during your menstrual cycle. It is the drop in the hormones that triggers a period.

From what you have said so far, there is nothing that is a red flag for endometrial cancer.

I hope the biopsy/colposcopy can be done really soon so you get some reassurance.

    Jane
