Basically diagnosed with endometrial cancer last week.21st August.Post menopausal bleed but waited 105 days to be seen by gynaecology. My gp told me the waiting time was 2-3 weeks. The Gynaecologist said she was sorry but I have cancer. Now waiting for CT and MRI to see if it's spread. She did say I would need a radical historectomy.I'm 69.All my smears are up to date.I don't understand.

  • Oh gosh-that’s a long wait to be seen by gynaecology. Different NHS trusts seem to respond quicker than others. The waiting for tests and outcomes is just so hard. Endometrial cancer is very treatable - I had a hysterectomy on Monday and honestly, I feel so well. It’s been very straightforward. I’ve had no pain, just a bit of tenderness. Try to keep busy if you can while you wait for the next set of tests. There’s a lot of support on here from women who are at different stages of their journeys. We honestly do know what you are going through. Sending you lots of strength! X

  • Thanks. I'm a wreck.Jyst shock I think.But I'm in Scotland and I'm frightened they've waited too long

  • Sorry to hear you had such a long wait. The waiting is the hardest bit. Try and stay positive there are some great specialists out there. I waited awhile from my mri and ct to my results but that was because my oncologist nurse was in holiday. Once I received them though within 2 weeks I was in and had a hysterectomy and also my tubes and ovaries removed. I am 7 week post op now and feeling fine. Waiting of histology results but I know the longer than average wait is because they need to determine what treatment t if any I need going forward x

  • Hello Ossi ten

    Welcome to the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of endometrial cancer last week.

I am sorry that you have had to wait such a long time for the diagnosis. The scans are the normal next step as they pinpoint where exactly the cancer is and then they can recommend the best treatment. This is usually the hysterectomy that has been mentioned.

My hysterectomy was in April 2022. It was a straightforward operation, I had little pain and recovered quickly. I was in hospital for one night. After the scans you are normally given a provisional stage and grade. After the surgery the post op pathology will give the detailed results.

Cervical screening only looks at the cells of the cervix/ tests for HPV so will not pick up anything within the womb. There is currently no screening for endometrial cancer and it is more commonly picked up after post menopausal bleeding.

I will pop a link here with some information that maybe helpful. Do not feel you have to look at it now but it is there for when you are ready. it explains about endometrial cancer and the possible treatments.

  • Sorry to hear you've had a wait, the scans will give a clearer picture and then a plan for treatment.

I had a radical hysterectomy last November and further treatments the first part of this year and the doctors and nurses have been fabulous and this forum really helps.

Sometimes especially with delays it's the feeling of lack of control. I am 64 and had clear smears as well but it is one step at a time.
