Adenocarcinoma of the endometrium

Hello. I've just been diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. This is 5 years after treatment for breast cancer. I've been on Tamoxifen and Zoladex for the 5 years. Could anyone explain what "Adenocarcinoma of the endometrium which is architecturally grade 1 but has high-grade nuclear features" mean? I'm due CT & MRI scans then surgery. I really have not got a clue about this type of cancer and would really appreciate any info. Thank you.

  • Hello Atlantic O

Welcome to the Online Community and the Womb group.

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of endometrial cancer. It must have been hard to hear this after being treated previously for breast cancer.

I will pop a link with some information on endometrial cancer.

Womb cancer booklet | Macmillan Cancer Support

We are not medically trained on here but if you give the Support Line a call and speak to one of the nurses- they should be able to do through the histology with you.

From experience I would interpret it as a mainly lower grade but with some higher grade features in the centre of the cells. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of endometrial cancer and where it begins in the lining of the womb. There is a link below with some more info.

Types And Grades Of Womb cancer | Cancer research UK

It is usual to have scans before surgery as they are looking to pinpoint exactly where any cancer is and along with your biopsy results- they should be able to give you a provisional stage and grade before surgery. After the surgery they will look in greater detail and that is the information that will confirm which if any further treatment may be offered. They also look at various genetic markers.

Hope this helps a bit, but if there is anything you want to ask, please do so.
