Possible womb cancer

Hi I’m new to this group. I’m 57 and been on continuous HRT for 4 years. Started bleeding 2 weeks ago with some cramps. Today had my ultrasound and my womb lining is 10.9mm thick so been referred for biopsy also have a small fibroid. Just hoping someone can advise how long will I wait for this referral and how long results take? I have been through this 2 years ago, but bleeding wasn’t as bad and everything came back fine, results took 5 weeks then.  However today I heard the sonagrapher mention carcinoma to her colleague so I’m very anxious, still bleeding today.

  • HI Barney,

I read that most biopsies come back negative for cancer, so I hope that is the case for you.

I totally understand how nervous you and of course it's a horrible wait.

My biopsy came back in 2 weeks, the probably have an MDT first before seeing you so it can take a few weeks.

Remember this group is skewed and most of us will have had a positive cancer result, people who have no cancer don't stay on here.

My advice would be keep busy as much as you can, especially physically it will help you sleep ,

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you. I woke up early hours and bright red blood was pouring from me, very alarming after no bleeding for several years. This has been 3 weeks now, though nothing as bad as last night. Will try to keep positive, best wishes.

  • Hi , a week ago today I had a biopsy and a mirena Coil placed ,I had also been experiencing heavy bleeds and pain at aged 57 and on hrt , i was sent straight to Gyni from from my GPs surgery ,I'm lucky that no waiting was involved and that endometrial hyperplasia was diagnosed straight away ,I'm also waiting on biopsy results but after a read around online , I'm a lot more optimistic and that this seems to be very common , the only thing I was confused about is that I've never had an ultrasound , perhaps I was bleeding so heavy that the lining was shedding anyway ? The wait for results makes your imagination run riot !

  • Am hoping to hear from my dr today or tomorrow, she’s very good. Oh that’s strange no scan, luckily my bleeding wasn’t too bad yesterday when I had it done, it goes like that, one day heavy next day not much at all. Fingers crossed you hear something soon, the waiting is the worse!

  • Hi Barney 45

I am sorry to hear that you have had some bleeding but am glad that you are getting it checked.

When I had my ultrasound I was phoned the next day by a nurse who had organised a biopsy for the following day. So for me it was less than 48 hours. I know some people do have to wait longer and it depends very much on how busy your hospital is. It can also be affected whether you have it done as an outpatient or whether you need a general anaesthetic. My results from the biopsy took around a week and by that time I had already had a CT scan.

I would try not to worry too much about the sonographer mentioning carcinoma as because the testing is effectively to try to rule out cancer- so although it is unfortunate that you overheard- they could have simply be mentioning it as that is why they are testing. I remember at mine I was watching the sonographer to see if I could read anything into his expression.

When I had my bleed I was told by the consultant at the hospital that only 1 out of 10 women with PMB would turn out to have cancer- and that they need to rule out the most serious causes first.

I hope you do not have to wait too long and if you do not hear anything in the next few days there is no harm in giving your doctor a call. Its also worth asking whether there is a short notice cancellation list that you could be put on.

With the bleeding I was told that if I needed to change a pad more often than every hour or if I felt light headed or dizzy then that would be a time to call my doctor or NHS 111.

  • Thank you. Hopefully will hear soon.

  • I completely get when you over hear something! At my internal scan I heard them say 66 which I thought was the measurement of my endometrial lining. Turns out it was the measurement of my womb. I was so worried as I thought 66 mm was a bit excessive for a womb lining given that anything over 5mm they tend to do more checks on!

  • Have now got my hysterectomy procedure booked for 13th, day before I go on holiday typically. I spoke to my hrt nurse today and she said my scan also showed a 15mm fibroid which could also be cause of the bleeding, which incidentally is still on and off. Trying not too panic!

  • Sorry not hysterectomy I meant a biopsy

  • Well at least you can get your biopsy over with and then try and take your mind off things on your holiday.
