Hysterectomy recovery

Hi, I'm new to this forum. I was diagnosed with stage 1 endometrial cancer 6 weeks ago and had a full hysterectomy 4 weeks ago today (robotic laproscopic).

I was so shocked at diagnosis and then so pleased to have had surgery so quick followed by great histology results 2 weeks later- confirmed stage 1 so they got it all. I think that along with wounds healing well and no bleeding initially made me a bit elated and thinking I'm over it.

Now this week, I feel weaker, more down, I've had some bleeding and my tummy feels bloated and wierd again.  I feel like I am moaning when I should just be glad and be getting on with getting back to normal.

I was on HRT but stopped prior to surgery and now those symptoms are back which doesn't help!

I have looked through some of the threads which are helpful although most of you seem to have had a much worse deal than me.

Would be great to get some more about people's timescales for recovery from hysterectomy if anyone could share.

Many thanks, Sarah

  • Pilates is my "thing". I was quite good at it before this and had great flexibility - that's all gone! So I plan to go right back to basics when I can as I know how beneficial it is. I think a tutored class won't take post-hysterectomy on until 12 weeks after so I'll be using that as guide if I don't go back to my old pilates classes. Sadly, my main love was tap dancing and I definitely can't see that coming back into my life for a while.

  • Hi and . Just noticed your posts and mention of pelvic floor exercise. I thought I'd read somewhere they should be avoided for a while as could cause a prolapse so I'd check with your CNS. Don't quote me I might be totally wrong but I can't for the life of me remember who wrote it.

    Sending hugs, Barb.

  • Hi Barb,  I was given a specific physio leaflet in hospital advising to do from day 1!  It is amazing how advice varies isn't it. I suppose we each have to go with what our team advises and what feels ok.

I do appreciate you pointing it out though.  Thank you.

  • My CNS said pelvic floor exercises in moderation are fine. I was given an NHS leaflet on pelvic floor exercises to use post op and just told to listen to my body and not overdo them,

  • Same It says to start them right away from the hospital bed albeit gently (no chance! I was more concerned with other things like not passing out). This says it would prevent prolapse in the future and to "try to use the pelvic floor exercises for any activity requiring effort i.e coughing, laughing' but to maybe have painkillers before doing them (the core abdominal hollowing one isn't very nice). My laparoscopic hysterectomy leaflet isn't as thorough and if I was going by that I could be looking at booking Go Ape for next week for all the help it is. Wish they'd be a bit more consistent but I guess it's different for every individual.

  • Very sorry ladies for giving you duff information regarding pelvic floor exercises.

    Hugs, Barb xx
