On 28th February this year following a bleeding episode my life changed dramatically.  Speed on till now where I am in hospital having had a hysterectomy 2 days ago.  Thankfully it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but now the wait begins for the pathologists report to see if I need further treatment etc.  Feel the next 2 weeks are going to be very long.

  • Hi  and welcome to our little corner of the Online Community. Here you'll find a lovely group of supportive ladies who have all been exactly where you are now. A possibility of cancer diagnosis brings all sorts of stress and fears and if anyone can hold your hand and reassure you we will. We're all at the start, in the middle or the end of what can only be described as a roller-coaster ride. The ride no-one wants to get on.

The waiting is always so very hard so if you want to ask any of us any questions please come back and do so. There's always someone around and we can offer a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold or listen to a rant, we’re here for you.

It might also be a good idea to download this booklet Understanding Womb (Endometrial) Cancer I found it invaluable in my journey.

It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear. It's free to call on 0808 808 00 00  8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. Have a look to see what is available by Clicking here .

There is also an Ask an Expert section, but you should allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

    Hi Lolak,

I wanted to wish you a speedy recovery and hope that you will be able to get home very soon.  How are you feeling?  I will keep everything crossed for you for the next two weeks.

I have my hysterectomy booked for 26th May, and will begin my own wait after that.

With all best wishes and hopes,

    Nad

    Hi Nad

Just got home there now and so glad although everyone in the ward was kind there is nowhere like home!  I had a vaginal hysterectomy which was not as bad as I thought it would be.  TI was petrified right up to going into hospital.  There was another lady in the ward who had the usual operation and she too got home today.  I just have to remember not to do anything that could hurt myself.

I hope your operation goes well too as I have no doubt it will.  Thanks for your reply and I wish you well in your journey.

    Lolak xx

How are you doing? They couldn’t do mine vaginally or laproscopicically. The wait is interminable but reminds me of the awful “two week wait” when I had multiple fertility treatments 20 years ago. I had counselling for those but nothing available for this. At least we have this forum. I will be two weeks post op on Bank Holiday Monday.

    All the best

    Hi Charsmum,

Do you have an appointment date for your histology results?  How are you feeling now?  I hope you are physically feeling much more recovered at least.  How are you finding the wait for the results at the moment? Have your doctors given you any idea about what they are anticipating the result will be?  Are you worried about anything in particular or just the whole thing?

I had a total hysterectomy done abdominally on Wednesday- like you, mine couldn’t be done vaginally or laparoscopically.  I am currently still in a lot of pain, although I was sent home from hospital yesterday evening.  I have been told it will be 3 weeks from my operation date until my histology report comes back, apparently I also had a peritoneal wash carried out to check for cancer outside of my uterus.  I have an appointment with my surgeon for 6 weeks after my surgery to discuss what comes next.

Wishing you all the very best- do keep in touch if it would help,

    Nad

    Hi Lolak,

Sorry to have not been in touch- I had my own total hysterectomy (abdominal) on Wednesday and got discharged from hospital yesterday evening, but I am still in a lot of pain.

Do you have an appointment date to see your doctor about your histology results? Or are they going to call you?  How long were you told it would take?  How are you doing with the wait? And how is your recovery going?

I hope you are doing well, and I have everything crossed for you with the results. Do keep in touch if it would help.

    All best wishes

It does get a lot easier with the pain. I found the long release ibuprofen which last for 12 hours topped up with paracetamol allowed me to get some sleep.  It’s nearly two weeks (on Monday) from the op which has gone quickly. I had some green discharge so went to the nurse at gp and they have been changing the dressings and I got some antibiotics which I finished today. Had 12 staples out on Thursday and 20 more to come out on Wednesday of next week.  1 more day of Fragmin injections. I don’t have an appointment with the consultant. When I got results of biopsy from Hysteroscopy I had to chase them and got a random phone call at 8pm one evening. That had showed Atypical Hyperplasia but he was 50% sure that they might find cancer when everything was removed.  Because of restrictions in my vagina they told me I wouldn’t be a candidate for brachytherapy so it would be external radiotherapy .  I find gentle walking  3 or 4 times a day helps. Hope you feel better soon and get a good night’s sleep!

    HI Nad

Good to hear from you and glad you have now had your op.  I hope this finds you feeling better.  I had my op almost 2 weeks ago it was a vaginal hysterectomy  as they had found cancer in my womb.  Thankfully my identified nurse told me on Friday past that the pathologist said the cancer was in the lining of the womb only so no more treatment needed but they will keep an eye on me in future.  I am so relieved by this outcome but won't really be content till I hear it from my surgeon in 2 weeks time.  It certainly has been a difficult experience.

I trust you will get some relief from your pain - are they helping you look at appropriate painkillers?

    Take Care
