Class of Dec2019/Jan2020 - how are you all?

I'm just coming up to the anniversary of my diagnosis this time last December and remembering all the feelings I had at that time.  Just had my third check-up with the consultant (phone call only) and all seems to be well.   I've had a few 'twinges' in the past month but we put this down to the surveillance colonoscopy I had in October that probably poked things around a bit!  Last Christmas I had the thought of the operation in January hanging over me and subsequently made plans for this year to be much more of a celebration - well, the best laid plans!   Who could have predicted that Covid would scupper that idea.   However,  I feel enormously grateful to have had my op and recovery pre-Covid when I read how difficult it has been for others on the forum during the pandemic.

I wonder how everyone else from last year is getting on?  I think those that were in my cohort were             .    Hope everyone is doing OK despite this difficult year and will be able to spend time with loved ones over the Christmas period.

xx

Hi its Lesley here .. how lovely to hear from you. Yes as you said this time last yr was dreadful for us..I've just had my 3rd check up unfortunately I suffered with trauma to the bladder after my OP and had a few problems there. What are ur plans for xmas  Lesley xx

  • Hi RollercoasterRide,

I was in the class of 2017, but I probably answered some of your questions!  I feel as if I've done fairly well this year. I've missed seeing Daughter 2 as she is near London, and best avoided. We have seen Daughter 1 because her husband is in the Merchant Navy and away. We made a bubble with her and 5 year old daughter, and have kept each other company. We also managed a couple of weeks away in our Motorhome in between the two lock downs, so lucky.

I feel for women going through the operation and the covid worry on top of it. I can't wait to get the vaccination, and being over 75 it shouldn't be too long!!!  xxxxx

  • Hi RollercoasterRide,

Good to hear from you, yes its been a strange year, but also strangely  it seems to have gone by really fast! I haven't had any follow ups as I'm on the patient initiated follow up.  Though I  have had 3 MRI  scans  one on each knee and one on my spine. The knee scans showed quiet advanced osteoarthritis,  though they don't  really give me any pain. The scan on my spine was clear but did show an incidental small cyst on my liver, which has been confirmed  today with an ultrasound. Apparently they are common and it could have been there for years and is nothing to be concerned about! I  have also had my first ever flu jab today.

I am also glad I  had my treatment before covid, and hope everyone having treatment at the moment comes through o.k..

    Take care everyone.

  • Hi Rollercoaster

It’s good to hear from you x I still check in this forum every now & again it’s been a very strange year for us all x my appointment have been affected by COVID it was tough leading up to the 1st anniversary but I got through it x I still have the odd wobble Christmas was awful last yr & this yr it’s going to be sad not to meet up with family it’s just not worth it x the support on this forum is just amazing xxx

  • Hello everyone, you know i think the first anniversary was the hardest, but as time went by I felt easier. Glad to hear things seem ok hope the twingles ease soon for you. I know you said that you suffered bladder trauma from the op has it been sorted or are you still having on going issues?  good that things are getting checked, I have a liver cyst too and was told that they are common and that you don’t always know they are there, knees it’s strange you can have really bad arthritis and have no pain I have heard this a number of times and I wonder how but it’s good too that it doesn’t bother you, and a clear spine fantastic. yes I believe Christmas will definitely be very strange this year and with worries over covid many are not wanting to see family because of the worry of giving covid to our loved ones, its a time when we have so much technology that helps us connect to others but not being able to seat together is very different. For me I prefer to limit my contact with others then feel uncomfortable worrying about covid. But there is hope with the vaccine that will hopefully make next year a much better time.

I was the class of 2017 like , i had my check up yesterday it was a telephone consultation, the gynae side they feel very happy about and feel everything is going in the right direction. The only red flags they weren’t all that happy about was my continuous renal infection and delayed QT interval in my heart rate causing sudden drop of heart rate. Although they feel it’s possible i may have a floating clot, not a clot to be too worried about at the moment but maybe worth it being looked into a bit more closely and kept an eye on. I told them about the abdominal pain and they aren’t totally sure if it’s because of the renal problem only because its the same side so I understand that one. So from the consultation they will still keep me under review and maybe in 12 months time they will let me free. But i had a good half and hour chat with them and felt at least that they were listening and understood, covid has complicated things in that everything has been either put on hold, forgotten about or constantly delayed and cancelled. So I really hope the vaccine will first be safe, but work so we can get things back to a more normal position. I really feel for everyone going through cancer and other ill health during the pandemic but I keep looking for tge future as a much brighter future, i hope this is true. Fingers crossed.

  • I am doing ok.  I had vaginal brachytherapy in January 2020 due to successful op but having grade 3 clear cell cancer which is considered more aggressive.(I may have had an early bout of covid  shortly after.) Since then I have had two physical checkups and one postal one, mid year, with oncologists. All good.  I have a CT scan due in late December and a telephone check up in January. Latest blood tests did show rather big drop in kidney function but that might just be because I didn't eat or drink for several hours before as it is a long trip to hospital and I did not want to use public loos while out. I do seem to need to get up in night more since op. Am currently supporting OH who just had a stent inserted in an enlarged aortic aneurysm.  Disappointed to have seen my grandchildren only twice this year.  Not been posting on here much since the reload of the software as my computer did not like it .  Best wishes to all.

  • Wow , sounds like an eventful year. I hope your feeling better now with kidney etc, yes thats the problem i have I don’t want to have to use public toilets if i can help it and since covid will not eat or drink out in cafes etc, I know on my recent blood tests the only thing they did mention was a reduction in liver and kidney function but considering I keep getting renal infection i am not really surprised . Sending love to your other half i hope the stent is working well and healing well from having it done.

sending gentle bear hugs to you both

  • Hi      and

One of my scans found nodules on my lung last year as well.  Had a follow up CT in Feb and all looked OK.  Just had another follow-up and am waiting to hear whether there's any change or if it's nothing to worry about.  Bowel polyp found and removed last year, so recently had another surveillance colonoscopy - all clear.  It's surprising what they find when they're scanning for something else!
