Diagnosed yesterday with stage 1 endometrial cancer after conquering bladder cancer 10 years ago.

I’m booked in for surgery next week, so pre-op Covid isolating now. Does anyone have any ideas to keep me busy while I’m stuck indoors?

  • Hi NewbieAndi

Welcome to the club. So sorry to hear your situation. Are you having keyhole surgery? If so make sure you've got some Bridgitte Jones Pants, they make life a lot easier as one incision will be just above your belly button. Also take a cushion with you for the journey home - amazing how much potholes hurt when you've had a hysterectomy!

Get your cards written, tree up, pressies wrapped. As for me, due to covid, I'm considering messaging all my friends and asking them not to send cards - who know what'll come through with the envelope!  Take a good book and some nibbles - I pack quite a big bag and only needed a nightie and dressing gown. PJ's might rub on your incisions.

    Good luck, B xx

  • Sorry to hear you've faced this before , and hope your surgery goes well next week. I was working up until the day of my op so found that distracted me from thinking about what was happening. Now it's nearer Christmas then I think I'd have focused on getting the family organised to take over all the arrangements / cooking / etc so I could recover at home post-op!

I'd second everything @MrsBJH says and add your mobile phone and charger/spare battery to the list. I'd taken a new cheap Tesco mobile with me (as the pre-op instructions said not to bring any valuables with me). However, I'd not used it in years and was so befuddled by anaesthetic that it took me ages to work out how to text and phone my partner once I came round :-)

    Take care,
    Dx

  • My incisions were below my belly button. Crochet kept me busy while recovering from surgery but in Winter reading and jigsaws are a good bet.

  • Welcome to our little corner of the community, sorry to hear after having bladder cancer before that now you have endometrial cancer. At least you have a surgery date now and i wish you every luck for next week. I got into art because of cancer as i joined an arts and crafts group at the local hospice it really helped find away of dealing with my mental and physical trauma from it and i continued it. I even started a thread in the womb group group “the womb girls arts and crafts “ have a look if you like, its well known that arts and crafts are very therapeutic and you may find something you enjoy. Some knit, some draw and paint you don’t have to be great either, because if it helps you for even such a small amount of time then its worth it.

    big hugs

  • Thank you for this advice, it’s most welcome

  • Hi Galanthophile.

Thought I was having a senior moment and checked my incision scars, I had one above and one below my belly button! So Brigit Jones' still a must!
