Brachatherapy

I had a hysterectomy six weeks ago due to womb cancer.  My final grade and stage is Grade 1, Stage 1B and I have been offered 4 sessions of brachatherapy. I note some ladies with the same grade and stage have no further treatment and I am confused why this is so.  Is the recommendation for further treatment purely down to the individual surgeon?  I have not yet had s follow up conversation with him so have been unable to ask.  Just wondering if anyone knows as anxiety is kicking in again.  Thanks in advance.

  • Hello , this is a good question, I had a similar situation when I saw others with the same stage and grade  had chemo or radiotherapy and I wasn’t offered it and had only surgery as my treatment. I asked my consultant and in his view he looks at the general fitness and age of the patient as an extra guide to offering the extra treatment, plus some do it as a belts and braces sort of thing maybe it could be a similar situation for you, definitely a question i am sure is at the too to ask him. Hope this is of some comfort and reassurance for you, other thrn that how are you recovering from your hysterectomy it’s still early days as onky six weeks ago but we all recover at different rates. Sending you a gentle hug Hugging

  • Thank you so much for replying on a Saturday evening Gbear and for the gentle hug Slight smile  I am finding I have good and bad days.  Wounds have healed well and bowels and bladder have returned to normal but I have had really painful sciatica which I think was the result of sleeping on my back for 5 weeks.  This has subsided now I can lie on my side.  However, still suffering pains in tummy and my left breast and shoulder but the worst thing  of all is the anxiety.  My operation was delayed for 3 months because of COVID19 and my mental health has suffered as a result. Hence the over-thinking and wimpish post this evening.  Reading posts on here I know how supportive you are of ladies ifinding themselves on here and cannot thank you enough for your calm and reassuring presence.  Gina x

  • Hi Georgie,

I was under the impression that if you were 1A you didn't need any more treatment, but if you were 1B, you did, because the cancer had gone a little further. Maybe it also depends on where exactly the cancer is.

I'm not surprised about the delay causing you anxiety. I think the Covid situation has far reaching consequences. I was shocked a few weeks ago when my nine year old grand daughter decided to stay with us without Mum for a week. She said she just wanted to see us. She was very quiet, and I wondered if this was the result of being cooped up without school or friends for so long? I just hope everyone can get over it without lasting damage.

I'm sure you will be fine with the brachatherapy. All the best. xxxxx

  • Thank you NannyAnny, that was my understanding too, which is why I was surprised to read a lady with 1b did not have further treatment.  Mine was a cancerous polyp which had just grown over 50% into the womb wall.  All along I had been diagnosed as 1a and I suspect the delay was the reason it was finally diagnosed as 1b.

I know what you mean about the impact of Covid on children. I have twin grandchildren with my grandson being a complete extrovert who cannot wait to get back to school.  My granddaughter is the total opposite and does not want to go back at all and it is her I am worried about.  Kind regards and thanks for responding x
