Pain after radiotherapy

Hi all, I’m new to this group so ‘hello’!

I had vulva cancer which was removed successfully via surgery. There were precancerous cells in my lymph nodes so I’ve had 5 weeks of radiotherapy which I finished 2 weeks ago.

yesterday I noticed a pea sized lump under my skin, it’s very dark red and bleeding slightly this morning. Also when I got up the sole on my right foot was really painful and both my elbows ache… I just wondered if anyone one here has had similar symptoms? You tend to put it down to recovery but never know if it’s something else if you get what I mean!

I will be contacting the doctor first thing tomorrow, such a nightmare when these things happen over the weekend!

  • Hi Helen

I had pelvic radiotherapy for endometrial cancer.

I would advise calling your radiotherapy department today and explaining. I was told to call mine if anything concerned me and that they would give me advice. Radiotherapy effects are normally within the area being treated. But it sounds like this is something that needs checking.

If you are unable to then I would either give NHS 111 a call and they may be able to arrange an urgent appointment. You could also give the Macmillan Support Line a call today (8am-8pm) and one of the nurses can advise you.

I hope you can get some reassurance soon.

  • Hi Jane,

    Thank you for your reply.

I’m not sure anyone will be in the radiotherapy department today as it’s Sunday.

I’ll try calling the support line later and see what they suggest.

    Thanks again

  • My radiotherapy dept was open at weekends so may be worth trying.

I also had a 24 hour number for the cancer unit.

Hope you can get some reassurance soon

  • Hi Jane,

I spoke to a nurse earlier through Macmillan support; she was very reassuring and said to get in touch with my GP first thing in the morning as it sounds like tissue changes which are to be expected after radiation (the lump is in an area which was treated). She also gave me a 24 hour number for the radiotherapy in case anything changes through the day today and I’m concerned.

Thank you so much for your advise; much appreciated :)

  • That sounds reassuring.
