Hi I recently started my treatment for TNBC my initial regime of chemo and immuno is every week for 12 weeks my question is regarding my PICC line I had fitted last week. It just doesn’t seem to have settled right, it’s causing me discomfort / anxiety and pain. I’m not sleeping because of it and can’t do things that I would usually do being fit and well (so far no chemo side affects). Did anyone choose to have their PICC removed and just go down the route of a canula each week? My concern in bloods plus treatment every week for the next 12 weeks will ruin my veins but this is just getting me down. Other than this I feel pretty good all things considered
Hi K123, my PICC line took three weeks to completely heal so please don’t give up hope yet. I was very, very unhappy and reluctant initially to have a PICC line fitted. I have sensory issues so felt the same way, that I would be better having a cannula fitted. But I am so glad I stuck it out and kept the PICC line. It’s an absolute godsend, believe me. I was able to sleep initially on my side only but was soon back to sleeping on my front without any problems. I hope this helps and good luck with your treatment. Big hugs
I had a PICC line fitted at my request prior to treatment for TNBC starting in Feb this year. (i've just finished my first 12 weeks of chemo with my drugs changing on my next cycle) I would suggest speaking with your oncologist about your PICC line or your Breast Cancer Nurse.
I have found it to be a godsend and whilst i haven't had issues with the PICC line itself (other than bloodclots in the early days which are now being controled by blood thinners), the issues i've had with the chemo itself, infections and allergic reactions have meant that a lot of the procedures of bloods being taken (often 2 or 3 times a day during my admissions to hospital) IV antibiotics, IV fluids have been able to be done through the PICC line instead of a cannula which can be very uncomfortable during prolonged hospital admissions.
If you can persist with it, it is so beneficial
