Hi

I feel a bit silly posting on here because I have not had any diagnosis of cancer up to yet.

I had a neck scan for a cyst at the back of my head and neck pain and do have a little trouble swallowing but nothing major. They found a thyroid nodule by incident.

it's 11mm x 12 mm

It's classed as a u3 apparently and is solid with more of a blood flow than they would like to see.

Anyway I was sent for a fna biopsy and my results are thy1 indertminate. I was sent then urgent to ent and yesterday I was told that they want to do another fna next week and then go back to ent the week after.

I asked if it comes back the same what next and he says surgery to remove half the lobe.

I don't really want surgery naturally and asked what percent turn out to be cancerous. He said 20% chance which is 80% chance of not.

My thyroid tsh test is normal.

Has anyone with a u3 nodule been in this boat and does anyone know if the nhs do the afirma test yet?  I've had extensive surgery a few years ago for a cholesteatoma which had grown everywhere and although not cancer it had done a lot of damage.

Is it definitely true that with half the lobe you don't need any medication? My function test is fine atm.

Thanks to any replies and I realise I have not been diagnosed and 20% chance is low.

Well just thought I'd update to tie it all up.

I went for my forth ultrasound last month.

My nodule is exactly the same. U3

    12 x 11 mm.

    Still completely solid

still more blood flow than they would like to see

and still, right (near enough touching) my main artery to brain and heart

But I've been discharged now without seeing ent again.

They are happy that it's not grown and after having two non diagnostic needle tests  they obviously aren't doing another.

I've been told to,"keep an eye on it myself" and "if there are any changes go to my gp .

I asked what I'm supposed to look out for and he said if I can see it or feel it then to go back.

    .

don't really know how I feel about it.

The risk "apparently" was so great I should have had surgery but I gave him an argument (my nature I'm afraid where surgery is concerned after my last one)  and suddenly my risk is not so great.

Oh well....I'm just keeping busy busy busy as always.

    Take care all

and thanks to those that helped.

Hi, I guess they mean if it grows or you have trouble with hoarseness etc to go back to your GP... but good that they think it's nothing for you to worry about for now.

I am having another ultrasound in October on my nodule and then another biopsy. It does seem to have grown to around 3cm and I am having trouble with my throat and voice again which doesn't seem to want to go away. I'm still hopeful that it will be a good result but if it has def grown then I think they will take it out. It's on my isthmus.

Good luck for no more problems issues with your nodule.

    Hi Jessy67

i know this is an old thread  but I was reading through some posts & came across this.

I’m just wondering how you are & if you ever went ahead with the lobectomy & what was the result? I’m due to have the left half of my thyroid removed in a few weeks but the nodule was discovered because of an enlarged lymph node above my collarbone & pain in my collarbone & shoulder. Just wondering how you got on?

  • Heya

I've not seen Jessy around this year.

Do you have any questions or concerns about your own diagnosis or treatment? If so, could I suggest you start a new thread an we'll see if we can help you out!
