Hi there
i have two nodules on either side of my thyroid which came back as thy3f after biopsy. This result falls into indeterminate group. Has anyone here tried Afirma molecular test to rule out surgery? At the moment I got recommended diagnostic thyroidectomy. I’m looking to avoid the operation if it is unnecessary and if I can get a more conclusive result. Has anyone ever done it? What was your experience with it?
Hello Evgenia
I have just noticed your post has not received any answers. I can't answer it myself as I have a different cancer, however by me replying it will be "bumped" back to the top of the forum. There it should come to the attention of other Community members and I hope you receive some answers to your question.
Best wishes - Brian.

I suspect it's getting no response because the answer is that nobody has had this.
I don't believe it's available in the UK.
But, I'm not an expert, so I would recommend contacting Kate at Butterfly Thyroid Trust and checking with her whether it's available in the UK.
Best wishes

Hello again Barbara,
I’ve searched online to no avail. I emailed Veracyte, Afirma and got no reply from them.
I found a clinic in Italy that does ThyroSeq but I’m aware that there are probably a lot of people wishing to cash in on other people’s misery. I absolutely have no confidence in the Italian clinic I found.
i will definitely contact Kate. Is it straightforward to find her contact details on butterfly thyroid trust?
I also have two nodules on either side of my thyroid. Classified as Bethesda Category 3. A follicular lesion of undetermined significance. They specifically took an extra sample to set aside if this happened and sent it for afirma testing. It’s now day 17 of waiting for results. They say it takes 2-3 weeks to get afirma test results but I’ve heard some people have waited longer. It’s a great tool to use to possibly avoid surgery. The only down side is the wait. I recommend talking to your doctor about it. I wish you the best and if you have more questions or need someone to talk to, you’re more than welcome to reach out to me. :)
Hi Sarah
thanks for replying. I totally agree Afirma test is a great way to further test something that comes out as undetermined. I hope you get an all clear. I’m only not sure it’s possible. did they say they’ll be able to rule out cancer? Also which country are you in?
im in Uk. Afirma is not available here or anywhere in Europe. I failed to find a trusted clinic in Italy or France, even though they do have representatives there. In Germany they said that in the case of undetermined significance they would recommend a test like this only to persuade the patient that the operation is necessary.
im more or less at the end of my road with Afirma as I couldn’t find it anywhere in EURope. I’m expecting total thyroidectomy on august 6.
all the best to you.
I’m so sorry you don’t have access to afirma testing and you’ve had to seek several avenues to try and find it. I live in the U.S. They pulled an extra sample during my biopsy specifically for afirma testing. I think it’s pretty standard here from what I understood. Good luck on your surgery! I’ll be praying for you!
