Hi, I'm just posting for a bit of advice, I'm not sure if I'm being overly anxious but I do plan on making a GP appointment.
I've been having regular heartburn for the last few years, nothing major though and usually ok if I drink water it passes. I did see a GP about it but they weren't concerned, this was maybe a year ago.
In the last few months I've started to have a lot of discomfort while eating and this has really ramped up this week, it's not so much heartburn as it actually hurts when the food is going down, I also get an ache across the top of my stomach and maybe unrelated but I've been having on and off palpitations too. The pain is particularly bad with dry food like chips and cold fizzy drinks. I get quite bloated but that's been the same for a few years now and I get full very quick, I'd say that's been the same for about 1-2 years. I've not lost weight.
I had a recent blood test (not related to this but for feeling tired a lot) and my results were ok, only low in folic acid.
I'm 38 so I know I'm not high risk for stomach cancer, but I'm concerned because there is a family history- my mum died of stomach cancer at 64 and her gran died of the same I believe also in her 60's. We were told that while 64 is young for stomach cancer it's not young enough for us to be tested for the gene.
I'm thinking it's likely the doctor will just suggest diet changes and medication but should I push for further testing with the family history as it does worry me?
Hi Bambiboo, sorry to hear about your problem, if it were me I would ask for more tests with both your mum and Gran having had stomach cancer also fairly young when they died. An endoscopy is what you really need to be sure.
With my husband having had his stomach out and me having acid reflux for a very long time and on tablets for it asked the nurse while I was seeing her for a different matter, she suggested me having a H.Pylori test so I’m picking the sample bottle up tomorrow. If I wasn’t on this site or the Oesophagus cancer site I wouldn’t have known all the symptoms.
As I said I’d push for some tests. Hope it goes well for you xx
Sorry to hear about the issues you have been having. I think it’s always worth pushing for more tests to rule out anything serious. It’s probably nothing to worry about and you will get medication.
If it is cancer then treating it early has a positive outcome.
I have had cancer twice. The first time I went to my GP and was happy to accept that it was nothing to worry about. But my symptoms persisted and I ended up with Stage 3 Bowel Cancer. That was 16 years ago!
Hope it all goes well for you!
Jac
Sorry to hear about your problem. I would suggest getting an appointment for a camera scan as soon as possible. It will help to find out what the problem is. And I would not hang around to long about it. Only saying it because you mentioned it is getting worse. And the longer you wait the harder the treatment is going to be.
I agree with the other replies, please insist on a gastroscopy, I have a family history of cancer and my GP wasn’t concerned for about 6 months, I have been treated successfully with chemotherapy and surgery,
l would reiterate your family history
Hope it is something else, good luck
I would seek an endoscopy as soon as possible. The delay could be the difference between treatable or not every day counts. Especially with your family history.
Thanks everyone- I'll give it a week with the Omeprazole then I'll push again for further tests- I know it's not likely to be anything concerning at my age, but it does seem to be getting worse, and my mums symptoms were very mild initially and not picked up on, by the time she started going for tests she was losing weight and struggling to eat and they were really late symptoms.
I had similar symptoms to yourself (I was 32 when it began) and was on Omeperazole for 7 years, I eventually through perseverance had lots of tests then an operation to resolve the acid reflux issues. The Omeperazole will lessen the symptoms after a period of time and make them manageable, giving your body a chance to calm down but if the symptoms continue over the medication or you need to increase the dose it is worth pushing for an endoscopy just to check out what's going on. It's also worth noting what foods make the symptoms worse and avoiding them (for me it was fizzy drinks and chocolate unfortunately!), what triggers you may change after time too. The aim is to get off the Omeperazole and work out how to manage the symptoms/food and drink intake. All the best, I hope it resolves.
