FLOT chemo Treatment

Hi all,

I started with stomach problems back in January, had endoscopy in March which showed an ulcer. Had a repeat endoscopy at the end of may with further biopsies. Ulcer wasn’t healing how they would like and I was referred to a specialist. They then diagnosed the ulcer as cancerous in may. Further endoscopy on the 6th of this month, showed that my food isn’t digesting and put on purée diet. It was decided that I would need four cycles of chemo, then surgery to remove part of the stomach, and part of the small bowel.

I’m about to start FLOT chemo treatment in the next 2-3 weeks before surgery, where I will be having the first of four cycles. We have a planned break away that has been booked for a year now, we are unsure as a family whether we should cancel or still go. Due to side effects of treatment.
Has anyone else had this treatment , and do they side effects get worse after each treatment. Or would it be sensible to just cancel?

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  FLOT is now the gold standard treatment and the usual pathway is Chemo then surgery followed by more chemo.
I had different chemo and it’s hard to know how you will react.  The first week is the worst then you pick up and recover before the next lot!

You may feel well enough to go away but I would ask the oncologist for advice. It’s important to drink as much as possible about 2 litres of water per day!  I tried to eat little and often with high calorie/ high protein food. If you click on my name you can read a Blog I wrote during my treatment.

I will send you a friend request and you can PM if you would find that helpful

    Good luck!

  • Thank you, we’ve decided not to go as it a long drive. Your post was very helpful and I’ll look at your blog.

  • Hi, I was well enough for small breaks during FLOT treatment, usually in the 2nd week after the chemo. Maybe you can get a few day trips, as you cancelled your trip. I had   4 rounds of FLOT before and after surgery. It’s tougher after surgery, mainly because you are weaker. However, I’m 20 months on now, and I am feeling really well. I wish the same for you, best of luck.

  • Hello

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

    My experience:

I have stomach cancer. I'd been having stomach problems for many months, over a year. I threw up blood on 1st Feb and A and E discovered a 3cm ulcer, with cancerous cells.

18march.I had my first cycle of FLOT. I was at Macmillan cancer support Ctre,  part of UCLH in London.

Was there for 6 hours. Great place, great expertise. I had a PICC line inserted. Then was given Docataxel thru PICC line and one other liquid drug, Anilyclin?  I Was given a pump to take home attached to PICC line,  thru which Fluororuacil aka 5FU was pumped over 36 hrs. Will be removed by them on sunday 12noon. Two types of anti sickness tablets are given.

I felt better , much better Sat morning! More energy, fresher, less of a fuzzy head, not much of a headache. This morning, Sunday, too feeling noticeably better than I have done in last few weeks.

I should point out that i also have prostate cancer. I am taking bicalutomide 50mg for that and am having a meeting on Thursday 24march about that. Am informed it's rare to have prostate and stomach cancer together at same time.

    Best wishes to all

Great to hear you are feeling better.  The chemo is doing it’s job which is good!  FLOT is the gold star treatment for stomach cancer and they will work out a treatment plan for you.
If you have any questions post on this Forum and someone will help.

    Take care
