Efudix

I have been prescribed Efudix to be used on the skin in front of my elbow once a day for six weeks for what is believed to be actinic keratosis. I wonder if anyone has first hand news about this chemotherapy cream, it’s side effects etc. I am waiting for the prescription and have been told to use Vaseline on the arm during the day. Any information anyone could provide would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi

When I was diagnosed with a BCC I had it surgically removed so don't have any relevant experience to share.

I've searched the group and found these previous posts which mention Efudix for you to have a look through.

How is it going so far?

  • Hi Latchbrook. Now started the Efudix cream and so far no change but I have to continue using it once a day for 6 weeks. Supporting cousin who’s wife is in a hospice receiving end of life care which is quite hard.

  • Well, I used Efudix cream on elbow for six weeks but nothing has changed, lesion on elbow looks no different. Has anyone else had no reaction to this cream? As they prescribed the cream, I was told dermatology had discharged me back to my GPs care who I suppose I will have to try and see again.

  • Hi

My husband's lesion didn't react to Efudix either. When he was prescribed the cream he was given a follow-up appointment at the end of the time he had to apply the cream to see the consultant. At that appointment she could see that it had made no difference and arranged for the lesion, which turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma (BCC), to be removed by surgery. After the lesion was removed he was then discharged back to the care of his GP.

I'm surprised that you have already been discharged without the consultant waiting to find out if what they prescribed worked. If that is the case then, unfortunately, you haven't got any choice but to go back to the GP.

  • Yes,I agree. I’ve also now discovered a hard white scaly lesion on the other side of my elbow so will try and get an appointment with GP next week. I never saw a consultant dermatologist but a consultant nurse specialist, I think that was her title. Will update when I know more. Thank you, as always, for your help and support. Hope you are keeping well.

  • Hope all goes well when you see your GP and they are able to refer you quickly so that you can get these skin lesions sorted.

The nurse you saw was probably a clinical nurse specialist (CNS). This was who my husband was seen by when his lesion was removed surgically after the Efudix failed to get rid if it.

I'm keeping well, thanks for asking Slight smile
