I had an urgent appointment to dermatology due to a lesion on my scalp that had grown crusty over 6 weeks. The dermatologist said it was OK and she would make an appointment for me to have it removed and they would have it tested to be sure.
The letter they sent to my doctor was different. It said the diagnosis was basosquamous carcinoma. Then in the body of the letter it said it was likely scc. My surgery is set for June 12th. I called doctor and they have sent another urgent appointment request.
Do you think I am panicking too much or am I right in trying to be seen sooner. I have had cancer before but not of the skin.
Thank you for reading this far
Hi Bearmaker and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I haven't had a basosquamous cell carcinoma but from looking it up I can see that it's a cross between a basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). I've had a BCC removed from my chest a couple of years ago and you can hardly see the scar now. I know there are people in the group who have had BCCs and SCCs removed from their scalp so they can tell you what that's like if you wanted to start a new post asking this.
I've had a look in the group to see if anyone else has had a basosquamous cell carcinoma removed and found that posted about having one on her ear a couple of years ago. I've 'tagged' her into my reply to you and hope she'll pop on and share her experience with you.
Possibly what the dermatologist meant when she said that what you had was okay, was that these types of skin cancer are non-malignant and therefore rarely spread and simple surgery is usually all that is needed to remove them. However, that doesn't mean that you won't have a meltdown occasionally and it's natural to worry as soon as the word carcinoma is heard.
Let us know if you get an earlier date.
Sending virtual (((hugs)))
Thank you for your answer. I thought maybe I was panicking too much as I've been through cancer treatment before which messed up my mental health.
I will let you know lf I get an earlier appointment..
