Hi I had radical surgery 17 days ago for squamous cell cancer in my groin. A large lump and all lymph nodes were removed. I am healing well they tell me but I have dreadful nerve pain down the inside of my leg especially at night and walking is very difficult. Does anyone have any experience to share with me please.
Hi , I’m sorry to hear you have some nerve pain, I had some when I had one node removed from my groin (for metastatic melanoma). It started a few weeks after my surgery and a few weeks later I realised that it had stopped. I told my team at the time and they explained that it was nerve damage that starts to hurt as your body is healing the ends are trying to mend together. They warned me that sometimes it takes a few weeks sometimes a few months or rarely never. They said I could gently massage the site using cream, but I had laparoscopic surgery so my excisions were small, and my pain was away from excision. If you have your specialist nurses number I would give them a ring for advice, they don’t mind doing that between appointments, they are there to help. Mine hurt more at night as during the day your mind is occupied, I took paracetamol at night time.
You have had a full dissection which I didn’t have and a bigger wound, i was told I couldn’t drive for a month, not until I felt I could do an emergency stop. Walking I took things slowly but my laparoscopic procedure was so I could remain as active as possible.
I hope you get back to normal soon.
Take care KT
