I have had cancer twice which makes me hyper sensitive about every lump , bump, ache and pain! Gaining trust and confidence in my body again is hard!
I went to my GP three years ago to get a small red spot checked as it wasn’t healing. He said it was nothing to worry about but it wouldn’t heal. He said it was a Dermatofibroma.
During my cancer treatment in January I mentioned it to another GP and she gave me Fucidin cream.
On holiday a couple of weeks ago I thought it looked bigger and started stressing! So decided to get referred to a dermatologist privately.
He confirmed that it is a Basal Cell Carcinoma!
He was very reassuring and it will be removed but it doesn’t give me confidence in my GP.
It’s easy to believe that something is ok if that’s what a doctor tells you. It’s what you want to believe! But you need to trust your instincts and each time I have had cancer I have known that something wasn’t right!
I know this type of skin cancer is not as serious as the other cancers I have had but it has been another sleepless night trying to get my head round this!
Hi Jacquiw10 and welcome to the skin cancer group although, having read through your previous posts, I wish I wasn't welcoming you to another cancer group!
You are quite right that once you've had cancer, mine was melanoma, it does make you very aware of your body and you do tend to worry about anything new that happens. I think it's because our body has let us down big time and it takes a long time, if ever, to fully trust it again. However, on the plus side it does probably mean that we go to see a GP quicker.
I completely agree that we do want to believe that there is nothing wrong when we see our GP but you've given good advice that, if there's that niggling doubt, get a second opinion.
As you quite rightly say basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is not as worrying as other cancers as it's usually slow growing and rarely spreads to other areas of the body but it's still another op you need, even if it's just a minor one.
Do come back and let us know when you have your appointment date and to ask any questions.
I hope you can get a good night's sleep tonight
xx
