I have 2 areas of BCC on my back - I’m scheduled for excision surgery in April. What is the average number of stitches when this is performed? I have no clue what to expect.

Thank you

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I don't think it's possible for anyone here to tell you how many stitches to expect. It all depends on the size of the excision site and even the surgeon might not be able to tell you until he removes the BCCs and sees how big an area he needs to remove. However, he will try and make the area as small as possible and you'll be amazed at how quickly the scars fade.

When you go for the excision the area around the BCCs will be numbed with anaesthetic first. You'll feel a slight sting when the anaesthetic is injected and then you won't feel anything else. The surgeon will then remove the BCCs and a small amount of normal skin around them. This will then be sent off to the pathology laboratories to check that the cancer has completely gone.

Most people's stitches are removed 7-14 days later, either back at the hospital or at your local GPs. Sometimes dissolvable stitches are used, in which case you won't need to have them removed. You should be given full instructions of how to look after the wounds and don't be afraid to ask any questions you have while you're there.

I had a BCC cut out at the end of my nose 8 years ago and had a similar experience. I had no dressing on it after a day and had to stand in the shower and douche the wound twice daily to keep it germ free.

I had my surgery on April 22bd. There was a 3rd spot so ended up with about 30 stitches. My stitches were removed a few days ago, it’s a little inflamed so I’m taking antibiotics now. The pathologist report showed clear margins!
