I too was really shaken when it happened to me. Yes, take it from me, you're more than welcome, you really are.

How worried should you be? Until you get over the shock and develop strategies to get yourself through this, I'd say your anxiety is entirely appropriate. It won't be as intense as this for ever, but it's bound to take a while until you feel you're on top of it. But you will get there, you really will.

It sounds as though you've been asked to keep an eye on things for the time being, and let your GP (I think) know if it's getting worse. Should this happen, as a first step there are various creams that are commonly prescribed to treat it.

Also, as I'm sure you've already discovered, good self care in the sun is very important. There's loads of reliable information about that online. Without much trouble I soon spotted advice that worked for me. Whatever makes sense to you is there for you too.

I'm really glad you came here for help. Please don't ever hesitate to ask specific questions. If it matters to you, I can assure you it'll matter to anyone else on this forum. We're all in this together.

Are there any reliable over the counter creams worth getting?

I'm not aware of any over the counter treatment creams, but it might be worth asking the pharmacist in any chemist.

On the subject of sun creams, I'd definitely recommend Altruist SPF 50. Very reasonably priced and available on Amazon. It's been developed by a dermatologist and is easily absorbed (I'd say it's absorbed far more quickly than any of the big brands I've tried). It also doesn't block skin pores and cause horrible embarrassing spots when you wake up the following day!

And you need a sun hat with at least a 3" wide brim. M&S stocks them online or there's always your local Army and Navy stores if you want something more heavy duty.

PS: If it helps, I think it's considerably less than 10% of pre-cancerous skin conditions develop into cancer (but of course many different variables come into play when you look at the statistics).
